➡83% of TK-Kinder-1st graders who miss one day every two weeks don’t read at grade level.

➡67% of classes failed in middle school are attributed to being absent one day every two weeks.

➡25% less likely to graduate from high school in 4 years when a student is absent two days per month.

Together, we must do everything in our power to help your child succeed.

September is Attendance Awareness Month, and GUSD has a challenge to see if we can beat our attendance rates and decrease the number of absences for every student. Make sure your student is there and counted!

This morning, the Gilroy Police Department responded to a call from a member of the public who reported seeing a person of concern entering the Luigi Aprea campus. The Gilroy Police Department (GPD) responded quickly to the call and put the campus on full lockdown, out of an abundance of caution.

Students and staff sheltered in place in their classrooms while GPD did a full security sweep of the campus. The police department determined that the reported person of concern was actually a staff member entering the break room while on a break.

We are grateful to the community member who did the right thing to "see something, say something," and we are grateful to GPD for their swift response to ensure that Luigi Aprea staff and students were safe.

There was never any threat to any member of the school community.

The lockdown was lifted and the instructional day has resumed.

The Gilroy Unified School District Board of Education will hold the September 3, 2026 regular board meeting at 7:00 pm at the District Office (7810 Arroyo Circle).

Members of the public wishing to provide comment to the Board may do so in person, at the District Office, during the regular meeting.

Spanish interpretation is available for those who attend in-person.

Congratulations to three GUSD elementary schools who have been recognized by California PBIS for excellence in putting the core features of PBIS into practice!

🥇Luigi Aprea Elementary attained Gold level implementation status;
🥈Rucker Elementary attained Silver level implementaiton status; and,
🥉Eliot Elementary attained Broze level implementation status.

The purpose of California PBIS is to establish a network for state education leaders, county offices, school districts and schools implementing multi-tiered frameworks through Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (PBIS).

PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. It is an evidence-based, proactive framework used in schools to improve school climate, enhance student well-being, and promote positive social and emotional behavior rather than relying solely on punishment.

There is a Spectrum internet outage currently affecting portions of the City of Gilroy, including GUSD.

As a result, our school and District phones are unable to receive inbound calls and make outbound calls, there is no internet service, and staff has no email access.

The school day will proceed as planned. If you need to contact your student's school, you should go to the front office.

For the past two days, our Transportation team has participated in trainings in preparation for the 2026-27 school year. Today, Superintendent Munshi stopped by the yard to wish them best wishes for a great year, and a quick photo opp.

Our Transportation staff is tasked with a critical role in our students' educational journey: safe transport to and from school. For some of our students, they are the first and last Team GUSD members they see every day. We are so grateful for their care and safe driving practices that help our students thrive on our campuses.

If you see one of our buses as you're out in the community, give the driver a quick wave, as a show of appreciation for all they do. 🚌💛👋

Congratulations to the staff, students and families of the Dr. TJ Owens Gilroy Early College Academy for being named the 5th-ranked high school in California, and 37th nationally, for 2026-27, by US News & World Report!

Schools are ranked on their performance on state-required tests, graduation and how well they prepare students for college.
