Gilroy Police Chief, Brandon Sanchez, and I met with families of Pleasant Valley Community Garden on Sat afternoon. We reminded them that City of Gilroy does not participate in routine activities of federal agencies. Members were also able to ask us many questions. It was a great event for The Chief and I to be able to speak directly to members of our community. Also got to see the progress of their garden plots. There are over 50 of them!

Today, the people of Gilroy gather not only as neighbors and friends but as a community united in remembrance.

Memorial Day asks us to pause and honor those who gave their lives in service to our nation — brave men and women who once walked streets like ours, sat at family tables, attended local schools, and called
communities like Gilroy home.

Memorial Day carries a unique and sacred meaning. While Veterans Day honors all who have served our nation in uniform, Memorial Day is
dedicated to those who never came home — those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our freedoms.

Today is NOT a day not of celebration, but one of reflection. A day to remember the cost of liberty and the extraordinary courage of those who
placed service above self. Let’s also remember that behind every fallen service member is a family that carries that sacrifice forever — parents, spouses, children, friends, and communities whose lives were also changed forever.

May we honor the sacrifice of the fallen not only today and not only
with words, but through the way we live — by caring for one another, strengthening our community, and remembering that freedom is never
free. We’re reminded that hope, service, and unity are the gifts our fallen heroes left us. Their sacrifice strengthens our city and continues to guide us toward brighter days.

Today it is also very important to remember that the freedoms we enjoy everyday, secured by men and women from all over the United States, who died for this country, were not all born in this country. But they believed in something bigger than themselves. Since the birth of this nation, 250 years ago, immigrants and family members of immigrants have served and died for this country. Their legacy inspires us, and inspires me, to build a stronger, more courageous and more compassionate city.

On behalf of the City of Gilroy, ALL of City Council, thank you to the families of the fallen who carry the weight of sacrifice every day. We stand with you, we honor your loved ones, and we will never forget.

The recent report that an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility will be located in South Santa Clara County outside Gilroy city limits comes as a disappointment.
While it does not appear to be a large-scale, prison-like facility, anything remotely related to the idea of mass incarceration of people invites fear and anxiety amongst so many. This is extremely unfortunate. While the proposed project is not located in our City, it does adversely affect many who live in and around Morgan Hill, San Martin, Gilroy and beyond. I’d like to reiterate, as I have done for the past year and a half, The City of Gilroy, including The Gilroy Police Dept. does not participate in the routine duties and operations of any federal agencies. This has been consistent over the past 18 month, back in 2016/2017 and in 2012/2013 when there were surges in immigration enforcement in South Santa Clara and San Benito Counties as well as The Salinas Valley.
In these difficult and uncertain times I will do everything I can, as The Mayor of Gilroy, to alleviate fear and anxiety felt by so many.
It is promising to know that so many people in South Santa Clara County care about each other. If any communities can get through these times, together, it’s ours.

Last week I attended the official grand opening of Con Azucar Cafe in downtown Gilroy along with Gilroy Council Member Tom Cline as well as representatives from Senator Cortese's and Supervisor Sylvia Arena's office. Inside the small cafe, it is lively with vibrant art works on the walls, hip, Latino pop music and colorful original decor with a giant depiction of famed Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. The menu consists of unique coffees, horchatas and chais blended with traditional Mexican ingredients. For eats they have their own special versions of Avocado Toast, Club Sandwich and what they are well known for, Pan Dulce. One of the cool things about this business is that it culturally represents much of Gilroy historically and currently. Visiting here is not just for great coffee and food, it's an immersive experience. When you go check it out, say hi to General Manager, Fernanda Gonzales!

Great day Saturday at Christmas Hill Park! Close to 1000 kids participated in opening day celebrations. Thank you to Gilroy Little League Board of Directors and President Jon Castro, as well as all the coaches and so many sponsors from local businesses! Your hard work and generosity is providing excellent afterschool activities for so many of our local youth! Kids got to hear inspiring words from recent high-school graduate and now D-1 collegiate athlete , Jackson Robinson. Special shout out to Council-Member Tom Cline for going first in the dunk tank!

Shout out to these two guys!!!!
A person is fortunate to have a great mentor in their life. I, like many people in this community are privileged to say that both of these guys have helped shaped me. I know there are many others who can say the same. I’ve always said, if I give back at least half of what these guys have given to this community, I will consider myself successful.

This year, Leadership Gilroy is doing something special.

For the first time, we are honoring two individuals with our prestigious Legacy of Leadership Award, recognizing the extraordinary partnership and impact of SakaBozzo, the creative collaboration between Sam Bozzo and Gene Sakahara.

Traditionally, this award celebrates one individual whose leadership has left a lasting imprint on our community. This year, we couldn’t separate the story because their impact has been greater together.

Together as SakaBozzo, they embody what Leadership Gilroy stands for:
✨ Vision rooted in purpose
✨ Creativity that sparks conversation
✨ Leadership that uplifts others
✨ A commitment to leaving things better than they found them

Their partnership represents the power of collaboration. How two leaders, working side by side, can shape culture, inspire change, and deepen community connection in ways that one alone could not.

This year’s Legacy of Leadership Award is not just about individual achievement, it’s about shared impact.

SakaBozzo’s legacy is one our entire community is proud to celebrate. 💛

Join us as we honor them at the Spring Fling, a Legacy of Leadership Award Brunch on May 30th at Hecker Pass Winery.

Thank you, Mayor Turner, for inviting me to collaborate on this project. Looking forward to seeing the trees mature over the years. I am hopeful those from Gilroy will find time to walk the Morgan Hill trails to see these new Coast Live Oaks and Western Red Buds. On behalf of Gilroy, we invite everyone from Morgan Hill and San Martin to come walk the trails in Gilroy along The Uvas Preserve and beyond! May the sharing of these trees, be just a small sample of the dedication that all of us in South County have towards each other.
