Gilt Edge Volunteer Fire Department

Gilt Edge Volunteer Fire Department Founded in 1986, the Gilt Edge Fire Department protects 41 square miles of western Tipton County, TN. We operate from a single fire station.

The Gilt Edge Volunteer Fire Department is an all volunteer department located in Tipton County Tennessee. We are the next county north of Shelby County (Memphis) and are the second most rapidly growing County in West Tennessee due to a large influx of people moving in from Memphis and Shelby County. We serve the Town of Gilt Edge, (population 477) the Town of Burlison (population 425) and approxi

mately 3212 citizens in unincorporated Tipton County for a total of 4114 district wide. Our district is a rural area with most land being used for agriculture or forestry. We have approximately 1200 single family residential structures and most of them are on lots of 1 acre or more. We have 21 churches and 54 commercial, public, and office structures. Our first due response area is 51 square miles and our automatic aid territory is 112 square miles for a total response area of 163 square miles. In addition to fire suppression and fire prevention services we also provide First Responder Medical Services whenever an ambulance is dispatched in our district. We are one of 10 fire districts in Tipton County that includes, Atoka, Brighton, Charlston, Covington, Garland, Mason, Munford, Quito/Drummonds, and Three Star. Tipton County has an automatic aid plan in place (formal, written agreements) for the entire county that sends automatic aid from two departments to the primary department on all structure fire calls. We run automatic aid on all structure fire calls with the four Departments in the County that border us. We run mutual aid to them when requested if we are not their automatic aid department (calls other than structure fires or where additional mutual aid is needed on a structure fire). We also run mutual aid when requested, with all of the other Departments in the County that do not border us.

This past Monday, members of the Gilt Edge Volunteer Fire Department spent drill night sharpening critical fireground skills and continuing firefighter education.

A majority of firefighters focused on ladder operations, including proper carrying techniques, climbing, and safe handling practices. These skills are a core part of fireground operations and are essential for safe and effective emergency response.

At the same time, several of our firefighters continued working through skills for the Introduction to Fire & Emergency Services course. This training provides new firefighters with the basic safety knowledge and operational understanding needed before responding to emergencies. The course covers the dangers associated with emergency operations, scene management, firefighter safety, and the basic roles and responsibilities within the fire service.

Strong fundamentals build strong firefighters, and we are proud of the work our members continue to put in each week to better serve our community.

If you are interested in serving your community and joining a dedicated team, we are always looking for new volunteers. No prior experience is required; training is provided.

Visit giltedgefire.org or message our page to learn how you can join the team.

A Rangeland Fire Weather Danger Statement is now in effect through 7PM for areas north of the TN/MS border. Low relative humidity and gusty winds will cause elevated fire weather concerns.

This week, the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend serves as a time of reflection across the country, and the Gilt Edge Volunteer Fire Department is proud to stand in honor of those who gave their lives in the line of duty.

Our station has been lit in red throughout the week as a visible reminder of the sacrifice made by fallen firefighters and the strength of the families they left behind. This is more than a tribute, it is a commitment to never forget.

We are also proud to share that Chief Fletcher is attending the memorial and is serving as a family es**rt during the weekend’s events. This includes participation in both the candlelight service and the official memorial service, where he will stand alongside the families of the fallen, offering support during one of the most meaningful moments they will experience.

We are honoring the fallen firefighters, their courage, their service, and the legacy they leave behind. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Gilt Edge Volunteer Fire Department members put in a strong night of hands-on training during our most recent drill night. Members focused on the skills that matter most when conditions are at their worst.

Firefighters worked on gloved-hand dexterity and communication, practicing fine-motor tasks such as assembling and disassembling hose appliances and connections while wearing full gear. These are the kinds of skills that have to be second nature when visibility is low and time matters.

Crews also spent time building communication under pressure. One firefighter gave step-by-step verbal instructions to tie knots while another followed along. This helps sharpen clear, calm communication, which is critical on the fireground.

Search techniques were a major focus. Firefighters demonstrated how using a tool during a search can lead to missed victims, since it is difficult to tell what the tool is actually contacting. Using hands and arms allows firefighters to quickly recognize a victim and act without delay. This is a simple but critical difference that can save lives.

At the same time, another group trained on trench rescue operations by assembling panel systems using 4x8 FinnForm panels and LVL strongbacks. These systems are used to shore up unstable trench walls, helping prevent collapse and protecting both victims and rescuers during confined space incidents.

This kind of training ensures our members are ready for anything, from structure fires to technical rescues.

If you are looking for a way to serve your community, we are always looking for dedicated volunteers to join our team. No experience is required, we will provide the training.

Message us or stop by to learn more about how you can get involved.
