Daytime Work Planned for Interstate 90 in Girard Township

Continuing work to improve Interstate 90 will require daytime work to replace portions of pavement near multiple bridges between mile marker 11 and mile marker 14 in Girard Township, Erie County.

Construction is expected to begin May 13, 2026, weather permitting, and is expected to be completed by May 15, 2026.

Drivers should be alert for lane restrictions during daytime hours and anticipate travel delays during active work hours.
The work is being completed in connection with the repairs being made between mile marker 18 and mile marker 23.

PennDOT urges motorists to slow down when driving in work zones, and also to be alert to changing conditions, avoid distractions and to pay attention to signs and flaggers. Drive responsibly in work zones for your safety and the safety of the workers.

Motorists can check conditions on major roadways by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to more than 1,000 traffic cameras.

ROADCREW POSITION

Girard Township is accepting applications for a full-time roadcrew employee. Qualified candidates must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent, possess a Class B w/ air brakes CDL (Class A preferred) and have the ability to drive all sizes of vehicles and equipment such as excavators, backhoes, etc. A background check, a clean driving record and random drug/alcohol testing are required.

The ability to lift and carry a minimum of 65 lbs. is required. The work shall include repairs and maintenance to trucks and equipment, tree trimming, mowing, general road maintenance duties and snow and ice removal from Township roads, etc. The individual must have a positive attitude, work ethic and must interact well with the public. Must be self-motivated, well organized and detail oriented. Evening or weekend hours may be required during inclement weather events. We offer excellent pay and benefits.

Chief Stan Freeland and Assistant Chief Steve Michael brought Platea Volunteer Fire Company's new tanker to our meeting yesterday. This purchase was made possible in part by the fire tax implemented by the Township in 2024. This tax is split equally among the three departments that serve us.

Erie County Department of Public Safety will be conducting a Quarterly Municipal Disaster/Storm Siren Test for Erie County on:
Wednesday, April 15th 2026
12:00 City of Corry, Columbus, Elgin Beaver Dam
12:15 Union City
12:30 West County, Edinboro and McKean
12:45 Mill Village and Waterford
13:00 East County
This test is done four times a year to ensure that in the event of weather related emergency the siren operates properly.
The difference between the fire siren and the weather siren is the following:
Fire Siren: Fire siren goes off in the event the fire company is dispatched for a fire, motor vehicle accident or rescue situation. It cycles up and down for a total of three short bursts.
Storm Siren: Storm siren goes off in the event of severe weather to notify the general public to seek immediate shelter and tune into NOAA weather radio or other media sources for information. The siren is activated and will sound for a steady 3-minute cycle.

Fill Dirt Available from PennDOT Maintenance Work in Erie County

Oil City, PA – Spring road maintenance season will be under way soon and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s (PennDOT) Erie County maintenance office expects waste fill dirt will be available as crews tackle activities such as ditching, shoulder cutting, pipe replacement, and other operations.

Fill dirt left over from PennDOT maintenance operations is available to property owners who request the material, and whose property is accessible and located near work areas. Some restrictions apply to where materials can be placed.

Property owners must sign a release form (Form M-666) which is available by contacting the Erie County maintenance office located at 9031 Peach Street, Waterford, PA 16441, or calling 814-871-4411 and pressing 0 to talk with the operator.

The form must be signed before any fill dirt is delivered. Forms expire at the end of each year and new ones must be signed annually.
