0900 Update and Demobilization — Southwest Kansas Wildfire

After our previous update, units from Crawford County and Labette County (Task Force 19) met with the Forestry Service and located smoke in an area that had been checked earlier that morning. Task Force 19 was the first team on scene, and the fire quickly intensified.

Additional resources arrived, and crews worked together to hold the fire line. Task Force 19 was later reassigned to the west side of Ashland to get ahead of the fire and assist where needed.

After 14 hours in difficult conditions and navigating unfamiliar terrain in the dark, crews made the decision to stand down for safety reasons. Units are demobilizing and headed home this morning.

If you see any of these gentlemen in the community, please take a moment to thank them. They worked extremely hard over the past two days to help protect lives and property.

1900 Update — Southwest Kansas Wildfire

Crews from Crawford County arrived in Ashland around 1:00 PM to relieve a task force that had been operating since early morning. They were assigned as Task Force 19, monitoring an area that had previously burned and watching for hotspots.

Due to dry conditions and strong winds, the fire rekindled. Crews are actively working to hold the line.

The current plan is to rotate out around 10:00 PM to get some rest and return in the morning to assist at another location.

UPDATE 9:20 🚨 Boil Water Advisory Issued for the City of Frontenac, Crawford County🚨

TOPEKA – The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a boil water advisory for the City of Frontenac public water supply system located in Crawford County.

Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:

Boil water for one minute prior to drinking or food preparation or use bottled water.
Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker.
If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears.
Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.
Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.
The advisory took effect on May 14, 2026, and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved. KDHE officials issued the advisory because of 2-waterline breaks resulting in a loss of pressure in the distribution system. In addition, the city cannot currently maintain the minimum required chlorine residual due to equipment failure. Failure to maintain adequate pressure and required chlorine residual levels may put the system at risk for bacterial contamination.

Regardless of whether the public water supplier or Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

For consumer questions, please contact the water system at 620-231-9210, or KDHE at 785-296-5514. For consumer information please visit KDHE’s PWS Consumer Information webpage: https://www.kdhe.ks.gov/468/Disruption-in-Water-Service
