At the tail end of tonight’s storm, Girardville firefighters were called to West Oak St. for a tree down. Upon clearing, neighbors reported additional trees down on Mahanoy Ave. Girard Hose members cleared debris to prevent hazards to motorists. Five members along with Rangers assisted with the call.

At 7:00 this morning, Girardville, Ashland, Shenandoah, and Mahanoy City firefighters were summoned to an address in town for a possible garage fire. Crews determined it was outdoor burning. Girard Hose responded with 7 personnel. Just some reminders to our community:

Outdoor fires are not permitted, with the exception of a limited type of fire rings. Please contact borough hall during normal business hours for more details.

Also, the fire lane behind the houses on the west side of John Street must never be blocked. Ever. Not even for a short time. This lane exists to access homes and Mahanoy Creek in case of a fire.

These restrictions are put in place for everyone’s safety, due to the close proximity of homes to each other in our community. Thank you for helping us keep Girardville safe!

Our project to outfit our new to us utility reached a major milestone today- it is now has suppression capability!

Over the past year, GHC members went from front to back, outfitting and configuring the vehicle to be supportive of all of our incidents. With the exception of the radio installation, all other work was completed in house by our own members.

Utility 45-71, a 2008 Chevy Silverado, has a 50 gallon water tank and 160 gpm pump, with connections for 3/4”, 1”, and 1 1/2” hoses. A complement of hand tools, soft water packs, chainsaws, blowers round off our brush fire capabilities.

In preparation for our future intention of becoming a Quick Response Service, medical equipment and oxygen is on board, as is two SCBA, a selection of air monitoring equipment and the ability to tow our special services trailer (our next project).

We would like to thank Steel & Sheet Metal Service Center, Reading Foundry & Supply (both of Pottsville), and Special Response Services, LLC for their assistance with the project.

Happy May everyone!

The school year is wrapping up, the sun shines every once in awhile, and we may even get out of below freezing weather soon enough! May kicks off our annual fund drive here at the Girard Hose Company, so be on the lookout for our members who will be going through town over the next week or so hand-delivering our fund drive envelopes.

Exciting things are happening here at the #1. We are currently outfitting Utility 45-71 with additional brush fire equipment including a portable water tank and pump. We are actively pursuing the possibility of establishing a QRS (Quick Response Service) in the borough which would provide the citizens of Girardville with medically trained providers from our fire company prior to the arrival of an ambulance. We are also hoping to host our annual block party again this August. In order to make these goals a reality, we are asking for our communities support! If it be a monetary donation or a donation of your time, we would greatly appreciate it!

Mr. Sharp along with the Spartan Fire & Rescue club hosted a tour of the North Schuylkill campus today for first responders on the 1st due alarm. About 40 first responders were in attendance. Thank you to all who gave up a part of their Saturday for this learning experience! A special THANK YOU to NS employees Mr. Towers, Mr. Chiplonia, and Mr. Beil for assistance with the tour!

Today the GHC participated in a sendoff of multiple NS athletes who are competing in their respective sports at the state level. As our president is a teacher at NS, we had the priviliege of arranging transportation for the students. Best of luck to all competitors!
