Our thoughts and prayers are with the members of the Carroll County Sheriff's Office, as well as the family and loved ones of the fallen deputy during this difficult time. We also pray for the injured deputy's swift and full recovery. May both deputies, their families, and the entire law enforcement community find strength, comfort, and support in the days ahead.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

At approximately 9:26 p.m., the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office received a request from a family member to conduct a welfare check at 13658 Fancy Gap Highway.

Carroll County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the residence. Upon arrival, two deputies made contact with a male subject identified as Michael Puckett. During the encounter, Puckett opened fire on the responding deputies. Deputies returned fire.

Both deputies were struck by gunfire. One deputy sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased. The second deputy was struck in his ballistic vest and is currently receiving medical evaluation and is reported to be in stable condition.

Michael Puckett fled the scene and remains at large. A coordinated law enforcement search is currently underway.

Puckett should be considered armed and extremely dangerous. Anyone who sees him or has information regarding his whereabouts is urged not to approach him and to immediately call 911.

This remains an active and ongoing investigation. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

During Police Week, I’ve spent time reflecting on the dedication, sacrifice, and service shown not only within our own agency, but by the departments and first responders throughout our surrounding communities. Every day, men and women put on the badge knowing the challenges and risks that come with it, yet they continue to serve with courage and commitment.
This week is a reminder to honor those who gave everything in the line of duty, support the families who carry that loss, and recognize the officers who continue answering the call each day. Behind every uniform is a person who misses holidays, works long nights, and stands ready when others need help most.
Grateful for the partnerships, professionalism, and support shared among agencies across our region. Together, we continue working to protect and serve our communities with integrity and pride. Washington County Virginia Sheriff's Office, Damascus Police Department, Virginia State Police, Bristol Virginia Police Department, Abingdon, Virginia Police Department, Chilhowie police department, Saltville police department and Smyth County Sheriff's Office.
Please keep all law enforcement officers, dispatchers, first responders, and their families in your thoughts during Police Week. 💙

A widespread "quishing" (QR phishing) scam is targeting drivers with fraudulent text messages claiming to be from a toll agency or "General Sessions Court".

These fake messages threaten legal action or fees, directing you to scan a QR code to pay immediately.

Do not scan the code; it is a scam to steal money and personal data. How to Identify and Avoid the Scam:The Text is a Fake: Courts and law enforcement do not send text messages demanding immediate payment or scanning QR codes.

Urgency & Threats: The messages warn of "court fees" or "fines" to provoke fear and quick action.

Fake Information: The text often includes fake case numbers, state emblems, or incorrect state information, as shown above.

Verified Official Info: Official toll violations are sent via U.S. Mail, not text.

What to Do If You Receive This Text:Do Not Scan the QR code or click any links.Delete the message immediately.

Verify Independently: If you think you might owe a toll, look up the official toll authority's website directly or call their official customer service number. Never use the contact info provided in a suspicious text.

Report It: Report the message to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.If you already scanned the code and provided information, monitor your bank accounts, report fraud to your financial institution, and consider protecting your identity.
