Glade Spring Fire Department and Richardson Ambulance Service were alerted to a farm vehicle fire on Loves Mill Road.

The caller stated the vehicle began to burn while headed for maintenance. The blaze was intensified by methanol filled tires (a common procedure).
No one was injured as a result of the fire.

Some days are harder than others in the volunteer world, today was one of those days where we needed assistance from neighboring agencies. Low on man power we were assisted by the Glade Spring Police Department and Damascus Fire Department.

Todays incident was resolved as quickly as it was because of our inter agency partnerships.

This time 15 years ago our community was in the middle of cleaning up, digging out, and serving neighbors. Community responders and citizen servants from all over the region poured in willing to support us in our time of need. Today we remember those we lost that fateful night, and remember the heroism from the first responders who served.

We've learned from the tragedy and prepared for future emergencies. We would encourage all of our citizens to make family emergency preparedness plans and maintain some basic emergency supplies.

We would like to send our thanks to the students, instructors and support teams who helped make yesterday's Firefighter 1 live burn training successful, as well as thanking the Town of Chilhowie Fire Department / Smyth County, Virginia for lending us their training grounds.

A firefighter 1 live burn training primarily consists of three evolutions for each group of students. The evolutions are a fire at the same level, a basement fire and an upstairs fire. Students also get to see the thermal layers, experience the challenge of not being able to see in the smoke, and feel the effects heat in a safe and controlled environment.

Today, the Glade Spring Firefighter 1 class completed the live burn as a milestone in their class that consists of total of 168 hours of training.

Instructors were combined from multiple agencies including Glade Spring, Saltville, Abingdon and Damascus. Additional resources included Damascus, Virginia Fire Department Station 1400 (Engine), Saltville Volunteer Fire Department (Engine), Washington County Life Saving Crew, INC. (Ambulance and Rehab). We all work together in support of increasing the training of our firefighters and communities.

For Glade Spring Fire Department, our commitment and dedication to improving our own ISO rating by addressing our prior challenge of training over the previous 5 years. Our members for today’s training included three instructors, and seven students. Wish them luck as they take their written and skills testing on March 14th.
