While we understand that our patrons sometimes need to fax documents, we wish to reiterate that we do not have a fax machine. There recently have been several people who have come to the library for this because they checked whether we can fax on Google.
Unfortunately, Google is not always a reliable source. Often, they work on older information that is difficult to change, even though we have requested that multiple times.
Patrons are more than welcome to come in or call us to ask if we can fax something. We love to see you; but to save you time and frustration, please note that the only public fax machine that we know of in the City is at Bailey's Ace Hardware, and we direct patrons to them often.
To explain the reasons that we do not have a fax machine:
1. When the library flooded in 2021, the fax machine that was here was damaged beyond repair.
2. When we reopened, the expense of a fax machine and then price per fax (and monthly service fees) were more than our budget called for when we were trying to rebuild and implement other services that I deemed are much more important for the community.
3. There are not enough offices that require faxing, but that do accept documents scanned and then emailed, to justify having a fax available, and really, not enough patrons who ask about faxing documents.
4. Having worked in an office where faxing was a regular occurence, I have experienced how often transposition of numbers happen, and the last thing that anyone wants is to have their medical records faxed to a place that has nothing to do with medical issues. That is a chance that I will not take with your private documents, and a liability that I cannot and will not subject the library or City of Gladewater to. Humans make mistakes, but I do not want to take that chance with our patrons' confidential information. It is better to send a document to your email address so that you may forward it, than to risk it going to a random office where others will have access to information that could irreparably harm our patrons' well-being.
I thank you for understanding.
