--FWP accepting applications for a bighorn sheep advisory panel--

Restoration projects for bighorn sheep face many challenges, especially in areas dominated by private land. To help identify these challenges and potential solutions Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is creating the Bighorn Sheep Restoration Advisory Panel.

The panel will serve in a temporary capacity for five months and will be appointed by FWP Director Christy Clark. The panel’s objective is to advise FWP on how to address the concerns of private landowners and hunters surrounding bighorn sheep restoration on private land.

The panel will meet monthly in person and with a virtual option from August to December. The meetings are expected to be all or parts of two days.

To apply for the panel, please submit the following information by July 3:

1. Your name and contact information
2. The organization, user group or interest sector you would represent
3. A brief statement (300 words or less) describing:
- Your interest in bighorn sheep restoration and conservation
- The perspective or constituency you would bring to the advisory panel
- Your ability to engage with and represent your organization, user group or interest sector throughout the process
- Your availability to commit to monthly meetings from August through December 2026

For more information about the panel, visit the Bighorn Sheep Restoration Advisory Panel webpage. https://fwp.mt.gov/aboutfwp/commission-councils-committees/bighorn-sheep-advisory-panel

Application materials can be emailed to Region 3 supervisor Kelly Proffitt at [email protected].

—Possible grizzly bear detected near Rotary Pond in Beaver Creek County Park south of Havre—

Last night, trail cam footage east of Rotary Pond showed a bear (what appears to be a grizzly bear) in the area. The bear has not caused any conflicts and may or may not still be in the area. However, recreationists and campers in the area, and hikers along the Mount Otis trail, should remain vigilant and be bear aware.

Bears can be found throughout Montana. People venturing into the outdoors can help avoid issues by following some essential “bear aware” strategies, such as:

* Keep food and anything with a scent out of tents.
* Dispose of garbage in bear-resistant bins; do not bury or burn garbage.
* Carry bear spray in an accessible place and know how to use it.
* Stay alert and look for bear activity and make noise periodically, especially where visibility or hearing is limited.
* Travel in groups and avoid night, dawn or dusk hours whenever possible.
* When on the trail, avoid carcass sites and concentrations of ravens and other scavengers.

For more information on bear safety, visit FWP’s page on bears in Montana at fwp.mt.gov/bear-aware.
