Marsh P. Johnson is Rowan College Democrats’ Black History Month Person of the Week! Marsha P. Johnson, a pioneering Black trans activist, fought for LGBTQ+ rights and was a key figure in the Stonewall Riots. Her bold leadership and unwavering commitment to justice continue to inspire the fight for equality. During Black History Month, we honor her legacy, which reminds us of the intersection of race, gender, and sexuality in the ongoing struggle for freedom and acceptance.

Our Black History Month Person of the Week is Maya Angelou! Born Marguerite Ann Johnson in 1928, the great poet and activist overcame a childhood of trauma and displacement to become one of the most influential voices of the 20th century. From being mute for five years after experiencing abuse to becoming a renowned poet, author, and civil rights activist, her journey was one of resilience and triumph. Angelou’s works, including “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,”reflected her deep understanding of struggle, strength, and identity. Her powerful words continue to inspire millions, reminding us to rise above adversity with grace.

In honor of Black History Month, we will be posting a “Person of the Week,” every saturday this month to honor the contributions of both these inspiring individuals as well as the contributions of the entire Black community to American history, culture, and society.

This week we are honoring Shirley Chisholm. As the first Black women elected to Congress, Chisholm represented New York’s 12th Congressional District from 1969 to 1983. She ran for President in 1972, becoming the first Black women to seek a nomination from one of the two major parties. During her time in Congress, she tirelessly worked for racial and gender equality. Her legacy paved the way for so many other Black men and women who serve in our government today.

Come join the Rowan Democrats in a viewing of Selma on February 4th.
Black History Month is a time to honor and reflect on the rich history, culture, and contributions of Black Americans. The Selma to Montgomery marches in 1965 were a defining moment in the Civil Rights Movement. These protests were driven by the struggle for voting rights for Black Americans, drawing attention to the barriers that prevented many from casting their votes.
