RJEC co-chair Lillian Tanski and member Amo-Mensah Amofa presented the report and recommendations to the Glastonbury Town Council at its meeting on February 8, 2022. You can watch a recording of the presentation on Glastonbury’s Video on Demand website at: https://vod.glastonbury-ct.gov/CablecastPublicSite/show/350?channel=1 (starts at 49:50 and concludes at 1:22:00).

As RJEC co-chair Deb Carroll shared in her introduction to the February 8 presentation, “Tackling a complex issue in a complex time has been a challenge. Yet the recommendations before you, and the data behind them, offer Glastonbury an opportunity to strengthen its community. With the presentation of tonight’s report, the Racial Justice and Equity Commission fulfills its charge and concludes its work as outlined in the [July 28, 2020 Town Council] resolution [on the Town of Glastonbury’s response to the public health crisis of racism]. We thank the Council and the town itself for the support shown in the last year. Without the more than 800 community members who completed the survey, the town staff, department heads, Town Manager, Great Blue Research and the National Conference for Community and Justice, we would not have been able to complete our charge. We hope that the Council and the community as a whole will take the time to reflect on the work we have done, and that Council will consider re-establishing RJEC with a new membership and a new charge of community building for Glastonbury.”

Over the next few months, the Town Council will put on its agenda further discussion of the report, recommendations, and next steps. In the meantime, the RJEC’s public website (www.glastonburyrjec.wordpress.com) and email address ([email protected]) will remain available, respectively, as means for the community to access information about the RJEC and to provide further questions and feedback.

Glastonbury's Racial Justice and Equity Commission (RJEC) is seeking participants for focus groups to learn more about the experiences of community members who are people of color. The information gathered--which will be kept anonymous--will inform the RJEC's recommendations for improving diversity, equity, and inclusion in Glastonbury. The focus groups supplement the community survey conducted earlier this year to help the RJEC fulfill its charter, as outlined in the July 2020 Town Council resolution.

Participants must be 18+; identify as a person of color; and either live, work, go to school, or spend leisure time in Glastonbury.

There are 5 sessions to choose from: 3 virtual sessions on Zoom coming up this Thursday (12/2) and Friday (12/3), and 2 in-person sessions on Monday 12/13.

Please see http://www.glastonburyrjec.wordpress.com/focusgroups for details and to sign up. Feel free to share with anyone who may be interested.
