Today was powerful.

Today, we paused to remember 8 first responders across the Commonwealth who gave their lives in the line of the duty. The 29th Annual Virginia Fallen Firefighters and EMS Memorial Service was a reminder of the selflessness and bravery of first responders every day. May these 8 men continue to rest in peace.

VDFP is pausing to remember the life and legacy of John Fugman. Fugman spent nearly 23 years working for the agency. He held a role in course development, test development, reaccreditation support, and the development of specifications for vehicles, trailers, and fire equipment to support the agency's mission.

In this memorial tribute, we hear from those who worked alongside John both in the fire service and Boy Scouts of America.

Rest in peace, John.

19 students recently participated in the three-week 1033 Fire Marshal Academy in Charlottesville!

Instruction included: scene safety, legal aspects of investigations, fire science and behavior, electrical systems, and building construction. Participants also completed practical exercises in photography, scene diagrams, search warrants, and evidence collection.

Students observed live test burns and conducted full-scale fire investigations in mobile burn trailers, working to determine the origin and cause of fires, while being mentored by experienced fire investigators from across the commonwealth.

Students also heard from a Virginia Commonwealth Attorney about legal considerations and practiced interviews, report writing, and preparing cases for potential prosecution.

Congratulations to all students for their hard work and dedication!
