Henrico Police Encounter Ninth Rabies Case of 2026

(Henrico County, Va.) – On Sunday, August 30, 2026, Henrico Police responded to the 800 block of Dirk Drive for the report of a potential rabies exposure involving two dogs and a racoon.

The racoon was submitted to the State Lab and tested positive for rabies. Because there was potential contact between the dogs and the racoon, the dogs will be quarantined on the owner’s property. There were no additional animal or human exposures reported. This is the ninth confirmed rabies case in Henrico County for 2026.

The Henrico Police Animal Protection Unit reminds everyone to keep their pets’ rabies vaccinations current to ensure the safety of their pets and our community. Henrico County offers rabies vaccination clinics twice a year.

The date for the next 2026 clinic is:
• Saturday, Oct. 17, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Western Henrico Government Center, 4301 E. Parham Road

For more information, visit our website or call the Animal Protection Unit at 804-727-8801. https://henrico.gov/police/animal-protection-unit/

We were thrilled to be recognized by the National Association of Counties for all the pets who have been able to find homes through our work!

Our Fixin' to go Home events increased our pet adoptions by 82% in 2025. These efforts could not have been made possible without our staff, officers, volunteers and our truly incredible community partners! Henrico Humane Society, Furbish Thrift and the William A. Harrison, Jr. Foundation have tirelessly assisted at events, promoted adoptions and individual pets, sponsored spay, neuter, vaccination and adoption fees for animals throughout the year for various events, and more. We've been able to collaborate with countless other localities and animal rescues on adoption events, pet transfers, raising awareness for foster needs and sharing supplies. We are a part of an amazing village dedicated to helping the animals in our community.❤

Alumni update! ❤

These two adorable kittens were adopted at the end of July and have made themselves right at home with their fur-ever family! Jonesy and Ripley are litter mates, and have been enjoying playing, sleeping and getting into mischief together.

Their family says: "They are so much fun!!! They are the rays of sunshine we needed in a year that hasn’t been awesome. I was never a cat person, never! I’m sorry we waited so long."

We love seeing pets adopted from our shelter thriving in their new homes, so comment or message us anytime with updates!

George wanted to share his gratitude for the thoughtful donations people have dropped off and mailed to the shelter over the last few weeks!

We're as busy as ever, but we are a part of an incredible community with fellow animal rescues, volunteers and kind individuals who are constantly going out of their way to help pets in need.

If you are looking for ways to support shelter animals, we are always in need of towels, blankets, dry cat and dog food, newspaper, paper towels, soft cat toys, canned cat and dog food and Kong toys. You can also find an online wish list for our shelter: https://bit.ly/hcshelterwishlist

For any in-person donations, you can bring them to 10421 Woodman Road, Glen Allen, VA 23060. You can drop off supplies inside the lobby or leave them by the front door if you come after hours.
