Starfish Infant Aquatics

Starfish Infant Aquatics We teach self-rescue swimming lessons for children ages 6 mos-6 yrs old, emphasizing safety & fun!

In just 6 weeks, your child could learn in weeks what it takes some kids months or years to learn! Starfish Infant Aquatics is a unique swimming lesson program for children. Our intensive, one-on-one lessons take kids from hesitant and unsafe around the water to being confident swimmers within a matter of weeks. While the focus at Starfish Infant Aquatics is on survival and water safety, children

ages 6 months-6 years old learn solid swimming skills that give them a strong foundation for a lifelong love of the water. Teaching competence before confidence, kids learn that aquatic environments are to be respected but also offer ample opportunities for fun! Lessons are individualized to each child’s physical and emotional development, meeting them where they are each day. Depending on the child, a lesson could involve working strictly on survival skills like learning to rollover and float or swimming to the wall, or progressing to more advanced skills like diving sticks or learning to jump in safely (with an adult right there, of course!). Given the unforgiving nature of water and the natural curiosity of children, safety around the water cannot be emphasized enough. No one is “drown proof,” but children as young as one year old are developmentally ready to learn aquatic skills that can give them a shot at survival, if heaven forbid they ever need to use them. There is no substitute for constant, eyes-on supervision and having physical barriers to the water. But if an accident happens, the best person to in charge of safely handling the situation is the child who can calmly and confidently handle himself in the water. Plus, how awesome is it when you take your family to the neighborhood pool, and your little starfish gets to show off his amazing swimming skills? Main lessons are held in Glen Allen, VA, convenient to Richmond, Midlothian and Mechanicsville, and also at the Weinstein JCC. Please contact me if you have a group of 6 or more and would like lessons closer to you.

Let's not put our kids back in a puddle jumper after lessons. 🤪

We know they’re everywhere, and they feel like the easy-peasy safe choice when you have multiple kids and a lot going on. But puddle jumpers teach a totally different body position in the water than the one your kids just worked so hard to build. 😬

So instead, stay enrolled in Progression lessons if you can.
Come back for Refreshers after 3+ months or a growth spurt.
Get in the water with them and let them use their skills!

And if the pool feels overwhelming with lots of little kids? Choose the splash pad that day. 😉

*Quick note—open water is different. That’s a well-fitted, Coast Guard-approved life jacket situation. 🛟

Before you search every room. Before you assume they’re hiding. Before anything else, PLEASE check the pool, bathtub, bathroom, creek, pond, lake, or any water nearby.

‼️ Especially if you have a child who wanders or is drawn to water.

Accidents can happen in seconds, and water accidents are actually really quiet.

Please share this and let it be one of those things every parent, grandparent, babysitter, and neighbor knows by heart...

🛟 Check the water first.

4 days a week can feel like a lot at first, but when you zoom out a little, these short, focused lessons help your child learn real survival swim skills in WEEKS, not years.

Even if your child is brand new to the water!

So yeah, a survival swim session is a lot for a little while. But knowing your child has safety skills they can actually use around water gives you peace of mind for a LONG time! 🩵

We can’t talk about this enough.

Separation anxiety during swim lessons is TOTALLY normal!

For some kiddos, this might be their first time in the water. And it’s probably their first time in the water without you right there holding them. 🥹

That’s a lot, and we get it. We’ve been there with our own kids too.

So we’re never looking at separation anxiety like your child needs to “just get over.”

We’re looking at a child with big feelings in a new situation.

So we honor the feelings, we build trust, and we still teach skills.
Because those things can all happen at the same time. 💛

Let’s reframe the way we think about swim lessons for infants and toddlers, because at this age, swim lessons aren’t just another activity.

They’re a potentially lifesaving step all kids need.

And to our swim parents who already get this and keep sharing why these lessons matter, thank you!

You’re helping change the narrative.

Swim lessons aren’t just a sport.

They’re a layer of protection.

This is one of those things that makes SO much sense once you see it in action!

We teach little ones to swim with breath control first—meaning they learn to hold their breath underwater before we ask them to coordinate rhythmic breathing (aka breathing out underwater and quickly turning their head to inhale like a lap swimmer 🤪).

For babies and young children this is for safety purposes first and foremost. Lungs full of air help keep them closer to the surface if they fall in.

And honestly, “my body needs air now” is much easier to understand than “this is exactly when I should breathe.” 🙃

So we get the hard stuff out of the way first.

Breath control, body position, coordination, and safety skills.

Then, when they’re older, stronger, and ready for the next step, rhythmic breathing is MUCH easier to add in!

Okay, we know everybody is around water this weekend, so here’s our Memorial Day safety reminder.

🛟 Wear Coast Guard-approved life jackets anytime you’re around open water (adults included).

🛟 Touch supervision for all young swimmers, even the skilled ones.

🛟 And when swim time is over, check the water again.

Have the best weekend—just keep those layers in place while you do it!!

Bonus points for remembering an extra reusable swim diaper! (and remember that the containment diaper goes on top 🤪)

Bring an extra towel for resting after lessons, comfy clothes for your kiddo, and please make sure you’ve read through the food policy before you come.

We can’t wait to see everyone in the pool!! ⭐️🩵

Why keep up with Progression Lessons?

If your child has made their way through Progression Lessons, the next step is Strokes N’ Floats—our invite-only class for kids who are ready to start building stroke skills like:

⭐️ streamline on tummy + back ⭐️ strong flutter kick ⭐️ freestyle coordination ⭐️ backstroke basics ⭐️ early breathing skills

We want your kids to be successful, so as they move through Progression Lessons, we watch for strength, confidence, consistency, and readiness. Then we’ll bump them up!
