Starfish Infant Aquatics

Starfish Infant Aquatics We teach self-rescue swimming lessons for children ages 6 mos-6 yrs old, emphasizing safety & fun!

In just 6 weeks, your child could learn in weeks what it takes some kids months or years to learn! Starfish Infant Aquatics is a unique swimming lesson program for children. Our intensive, one-on-one lessons take kids from hesitant and unsafe around the water to being confident swimmers within a matter of weeks. While the focus at Starfish Infant Aquatics is on survival and water safety, children

ages 6 months-6 years old learn solid swimming skills that give them a strong foundation for a lifelong love of the water. Teaching competence before confidence, kids learn that aquatic environments are to be respected but also offer ample opportunities for fun! Lessons are individualized to each child’s physical and emotional development, meeting them where they are each day. Depending on the child, a lesson could involve working strictly on survival skills like learning to rollover and float or swimming to the wall, or progressing to more advanced skills like diving sticks or learning to jump in safely (with an adult right there, of course!). Given the unforgiving nature of water and the natural curiosity of children, safety around the water cannot be emphasized enough. No one is “drown proof,” but children as young as one year old are developmentally ready to learn aquatic skills that can give them a shot at survival, if heaven forbid they ever need to use them. There is no substitute for constant, eyes-on supervision and having physical barriers to the water. But if an accident happens, the best person to in charge of safely handling the situation is the child who can calmly and confidently handle himself in the water. Plus, how awesome is it when you take your family to the neighborhood pool, and your little starfish gets to show off his amazing swimming skills? Main lessons are held in Glen Allen, VA, convenient to Richmond, Midlothian and Mechanicsville, and also at the Weinstein JCC. Please contact me if you have a group of 6 or more and would like lessons closer to you.

You already put in the work. Now let’s keep those skills moving forward!

Swimming throughout the fall and winter gives your child a chance to keep using what they’ve learned, stay comfortable in the water, and continue building strength and coordination instead of taking several months off and picking everything back up next summer.

We currently have a few progression spots available for our GRADUATES!

If your child is ready to keep swimming, check current Progression availability here ⬇️

If your baby fell in the water alone, their ability to find their own air is the last layer of protection they have.

Learning to roll to their back and float independently gives them something they can do while grown-ups are on the way.

This small skill has a very big job. That’s why we teach it so early. 🩵

It’s kind of funny how these six weeks feel so monumental to us as parents, but our kids grow up not even remembering that they took swim lessons. 🤪

When they start their Survival Session young and stay consistent with Progression Lessons, they grow up feeling like they've always known how to handle themselves in the water!

Pretty darn cool if you ask us. 😊

Kids fall in the water wearing clothes, so we think they should learn how to float wearing clothes, too!

That’s why a clothing checkout is one of the most important parts of our program. Once your child’s skills are solid in a swimsuit, we practice them in the kinds of clothes they might actually be wearing if they unexpectedly ended up in the water.

Drowning prevention isn’t just for summer. We care about your kids’ safety all year long. 🎒

We think there’s room for both. 🩵

We want your kids to love being in the water.

We also want that fun to be backed by real skills. That means knowing how to find the surface, get to a float, breathe, and keep swimming, even if something unexpected happens.

You won’t always be standing right next to the water. And the truth is, most drownings in young children happen during non-swim times.

Those are often the moments when we’re not even thinking about the water.

Supervision, barriers, and other layers of water safety protection always matter.

But if, for some reason, our child ends up in the water alone, we want to make sure they can respond if they reach the water before an adult can reach them.

📅 New student lessons begin August 31.

Water safety means your child needs to be able to do more than perform individual skills in isolation.

It’s not just, can you hold your breath? Or can you float on your back?

It’s, can you hold your breath, turn and find the surface, and wait until you get there to roll into your float?

Once you’re floating, can you breathe, look around, and figure out where you need to go?

Then can you take another breath, roll over and swim toward safety?

Real situations don’t happen one skill at a time.

⭐️ That’s why we practice these skills together again and again until your child learns to connect and use them when they need to respond!

YAY, you’re officially in the water! 🎉 If this is your swimmer’s first week in the pool, your child is meeting Ms. Katie, learning a brand-new routine, figuring out what’s expected of them in the water, and starting to build skills they’ll practice again and again over the next several weeks.

Some things will click quickly. Others will take repetition, and that’s exactly how the process is supposed to work!

And a few reminders to help the week go smoothly. 😊

🩵 Please help us help your swimmer by making sure you understand and follow the food policy.

🩵 Keep handoffs quick, confident, and upbeat. A simple, “Have fun swimming! I’ll see you in a few minutes!” is perfect.

🩵 And let’s skip the “sorry.” You have nothing to be sorry for! We want your swimmer hearing from you that lessons are a safe, positive part of their routine.

And if watching lessons is making those handoffs harder for your swimmer, let us know. We can help you find a spot out of sight to watch. 😉
