🚨 BLACK BEAR SIGHTINGS — SAFETY REMINDER 🚨🐻

Our department has recently received multiple calls about black bear sightings near Oak St. in Glen Arbor.

While bears are usually not aggressive, they are wild animals and should always be treated with caution and respect.

If you encounter a black bear:
• Do not approach or feed the bear
• Keep children and pets close
• Back away slowly and give the bear plenty of space
• Do not run
• Make noise and appear large if the bear approaches
• Secure garbage, bird feeders, and outdoor pet food to avoid attracting wildlife

If a bear is actively threatening people, causing damage, or refusing to leave a populated area, then contact local law enforcement or emergency services.

Our department is continuing to monitor reports and appreciates the community’s help in keeping both residents and wildlife safe.

Stay alert and stay safe!

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of longtime GLFD member Firefighter/EMT Tim Nichols. Tim served this community for more than 42 years, giving his time, his heart, and his steady presence to anyone who needed help.

Tim was the kind of person who always ran toward those in need—whether on an emergency call, at Riverfront Pizza, or quietly helping neighbors without ever seeking recognition. His dedication, humility, and kindness made him a pillar of Glen Arbor and a mentor to many in our department.

His loss is deeply felt, but the impact he made will continue to guide and strengthen us.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, October 10, 2026, from 2–4 PM at the Glen Lake Public Safety Building in Glen Arbor.

Rest easy, Tim. We’ll take it from here.

🚨❄️ PUBLIC SAFETY ANNOUNCEMENT ❄️🚨

Due to current weather conditions and the closure of M-72, emergency response times may be delayed.

Our crews are committed to serving the community and will continue to respond to all calls for service. However, snow-covered and impassable roadways may impact how quickly we can safely reach you. It is very possible that we may be unable to reach you but understand that we are doing everything we can to respond to all calls for service.

We are actively working alongside the Leelanau County Road Commission and Leelanau County Sheriff to help ensure routes become passable as quickly as possible.

⚠️ What you can do:
• Avoid unnecessary travel during severe conditions
• Keep fire hydrants and access points clear of snow
• Ensure your driveway and address are visible and accessible

Please know that we are doing everything possible to respond as quickly and safely as conditions allow.

Thank you for your patience, understanding, and support. Stay safe.

❄️🚒 PUBLIC SAFETY MESSAGE 🚒❄️

With the recent snowfall, the Fire Department would like to remind residents to check the outside vents on their homes. Snow accumulation can quickly cover or block vents and exhaust pipes.

Please take a moment to make sure the following vents are clear of snow and ice:
• Furnace vents
• Dryer vents
• Water heater vents
• Gas appliance exhaust vents

Blocked vents can cause carbon monoxide to build up inside the home, which is a serious and potentially life-threatening hazard.

✔ Take a few minutes to clear snow away from all exterior vents.
✔ Ensure you have working carbon monoxide detectors installed in your home.

Please help us spread the word by sharing this reminder with friends, family, and neighbors.

Stay safe and warm. ❄️🚒

Power outages are something we experience quite a bit in this area with the unpredictable Michigan weather, and so we decided to share this important safety tip!

Be sure to use portable generators outdoors in a well-ventilated area away from your home to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide exposure!
