Swimmer’s itch can put a damper on the day, but science shows that prevention is still the best way to avoid catching it. Because the itch-causing parasite lives in multiple different animals like birds and snails, it’s not possible to remove it from the watershed.

A little planning can make all the difference. Follow the tips in our latest blog to avoid the itch.

Conservation work doesn’t just materialize. It’s driven by passionate scientists—and scientists in the making!

Meet Sophie Schwartz, our 2026 Watershed Science and Outreach Intern. Sophie attended high school at The Leelanau School and fell in love with the area and its natural beauty. Now, she’s supporting our science and stewardship while finishing her degree. In the future, Sophie wants to connect her passions for film and conservation work into a meaningful career.

Learn more about our algae experiment with researchers from Grand Valley State University! Remember: please leave these experiments floating on the North shore near Glen Craft and near the Narrows. The research team will remove them later this month.

This Watershed Wellness Wednesday, we’re zooming in on our volunteers who play direct and critical roles in our mission to protect and strengthen the watershed from aggressive invasive plants like Eurasian watermilfoil (EWM). Anyone in the watershed, and especially our riparian residents, can make a major impact by signing up for our Community-Based Monitoring Program: glenlakeassociation.org/EWM-CBMP Simply walk your shoreline a couple times a week to watch for and collect any sprigs that could be EWM.

Calling all scientists in the freshwater conservation space! Apply by September 1 for our full-time Watershed Scientist and Program Manager position. Go, Greta, go! While on a GLA Discovery Boat Tour, we spotted a strand of watermilfoil floating on Fisher Lake. "Could it be invasive Eurasian watermilfoil?" 🤔🌿 Greta bravely took on the challenge. She jumped right in to retrieve the specimen. We’re happy to report that it was whorled watermilfoil, which is a native plant.

What’s that in the water? Is someone littering in Glen Lake? 😱

Not a chance! The GLA has teamed up with researchers from Grand Valley State University to measure how specific nutrients may interact with algae. You may find these experiments floating on the North shore near Glen Craft and near the Narrows. They'll be removed later in August, but please try not to disturb them for now.
