June 19th is Freedom Day!

Also known as Juneteenth, June 19, 2026, marks the 161st anniversary of the liberation of the last enslaved African Americans in Texas. On June 19, 1865, federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to take control of the state and ensure the freedom of all enslaved individuals.

Today, Juneteenth, is a commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States, and also a day for African Americans to celebrate not only their freedom but also their community’s rich history, culture, and achievements.

June 15th, 2026 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

Today, we recognize World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), a day dedicated to highlighting the mistreatment of older adults and advocating for dignity, respect, and protection for all elders. Elder abuse can take many forms, including physical, psychological, and verbal abuse, as well as sexual abuse, financial exploitation, and neglect. Today, we encourage everyone to take action against elder abuse by raising awareness.

If you see signs of potential abuse in your community, report it to the police and/or to Adult Protective Services at 410-269-4500.

If you see maltreatment in a nursing home or assisted living home, report it to the Anne Arundel County Local Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program at 410-222-4464.

June 14th, 2026 is World Blood Donor Day!

This year’s campaign, “One Drop of Humanity. Give Blood. Save Lives.”, places humanity at the heart of every blood donation. It reminds us that each donation is more than a medical act: it is a powerful expression of solidarity, compassion and collective responsibility.

Inspired by the idea that the whole of humanity can be reflected in a single drop, the campaign highlights how every donor helps form a lifeline that connects and protects us all.

June 12th, 2026 is Women Veteran's Day!

Women Veterans Day commemorates the signing of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act, granting women the right to serve as permanent members in the military.

Although women have been a part of the U.S. Military since the Revolutionary War, formal integration did not occur until 1948.

Today, women serve across all military roles but continue to face unique challenges regarding respect, recognition, health, and safety. This day honors all women veterans and acknowledges their contributions, struggles, and sacrifice.
