When a child experiences a medical emergency, every second counts—and so does having the right training, equipment, and treatment protocols.
The STARS (Specialized Training and Response for Sick and Injured Children) Program is designed to improve the care provided to pediatric patients by ensuring EMS personnel receive advanced education focused specifically on the unique needs of infants, children, and adolescents. Children are not simply "small adults." Their anatomy, physiology, and emotional needs require specialized assessment and treatment approaches.
Through programs like STARS, paramedics and EMTs receive enhanced training in:
✅ Pediatric assessment and recognition of critical illness
✅ Airway and respiratory emergencies
✅ Trauma management
✅ Medication administration and dosing for children
✅ Family-centered care and communication during emergencies
✅ Early recognition of life-threatening conditions
For families, this means greater confidence that when an emergency occurs, their child is receiving evidence-based care from providers trained to manage pediatric emergencies effectively and compassionately.
At the Glen Carbon Fire Protection District, we are committed to continuously improving our skills and staying current with pediatric best practices. Programs like STARS help ensure we are prepared to provide the highest level of care for our youngest and most vulnerable patients when they need us most.
💙 Because every child deserves the best possible chance at a healthy outcome.
