The Glade Creek Road and Campground has reopened as of Wednesday, August 20. The Nuttallburg and Cunard Roads and the Brooklyn Campground remain closed with no forecast at present as to when the roads/campground might reopen. Check back here or on the park website at nps.gov/neri for updates.

Fayette Station road will reopen Wednesday morning, 08/19/26. The status remains the same for the additional road closures.

PARK STATUS UPDATE: 08/17/16

The closure along the Fayette Station Road has extended to from Teay's Landing on the north side until the start of the two-way section of road on the south side. The park is working with the WV Division of Highways to resolve issues.

Cunard road has multiple active slides as well as downed trees making both the river access and the Brooklyn campground inaccessible. The road will most likely remain closed throughout the week until soil conditions dry and the debris can be removed from the roadway.

The Nuttalburg road remains impassable and closed at this time.

The Glade Creek road remains closed at this time past the Grandview Sandbar campground.

The road to Thurmond is currently passable.

The park is currently assessing trails and advises caution if hiking. Any issues can be reported here via messaging, by email to the park's website at www.nps.gov/neri, or by calling the park at 304-465-0508. Location descriptions and/or photographs are helpful.

PARK STATUS UPDATE

Its been a long day of assessing damage around the park and we wanted to bring you the latest updates.

Due to a large washout the road to Nuttalburg is currently impassable and remains closed at this time.

Fayette Station currently is closed from the overhead railroad bridge on the south side all the way to the Outpost Campground due to downed trees which are large enough that equipment will be required to move them. Two way traffic is open on the north side.

Cunard road is closed due to a debris slide as well as downed trees making both the river access point and the Brooklyn campground inaccessible.

Glade Creek rd remains closed at this time past the Grandview Sandbar campground.

The road to Thurmond is currently passable.

With more rain expected overnight we suggest visitors remain vigilant and prioritize safety especially if visiting low lying areas. We will continue to update as conditions change.

CAUTION ADVISED: Please use caution in low-lying areas throughout the park due to heavy rains and saturated soil conditions. High water conditions currently exist in Glen Jean, the Dun Glen area, Minden, Cunard and along the road to Thurmond. The Thurmond depot and Glade Creek road remain closed. Inclement Weather Closure:

Due to the current flash flood warning the Thurmond Visitor Center will delay its opening until at least 12:00 PM. We encourage everyone to stay safe out there, avoid travelling during the flash flood warning, and don't walk, bike, or drive through moving water.

We appreciate everyone's patience at this time.

Temporary Closure of Gauley River NRA’s Tailwaters Campground

GLEN JEAN, WV- The Tailwaters Campground in Gauley River National Recreation Area, located below Summersville Dam on the upper Gauley, will temporarily close for the beginning of ‘Gauley Season’ this year. The campground closure will begin on Friday, September 11, lasting for three weeks until it reopens on Monday, September 28.

The closure is necessary to provide better and easier access to the upper Gauley during this extremely popular period of use by both private boaters and commercial rafting companies. The closure will enable the addition of around 50 additional parking sites for private boaters, assisting with traffic flow, congestion, and overall ease of site use. Put-ins and take-outs will operate as in the past with no charge for river access or parking.

Camping during this time will be available at the nearby U.S. Army Corp of Engineer’s Battle Run Campground at Summersville Lake, at Summersville Lake State Park, and at several private facilities in the surrounding area. Information on rates, reservations, and payment options (some facilities are cashless) are available at individual websites and by calling.

CAMPGROUND/ROAD CLOSURE: Glade Creek Road is temporarily closed due to a slide just beyond the Grandview Sandbar Campground. The Glade Creek Campground is also temporarily closed until the road can be cleared. Check back here or on the park website at nps.gov/neri for updates.

SAFETY ALERT: Rain and high winds create less than optimum conditions for being out on trails and along narrow roadways in the park, some of which parallel creeks that flow into the New River. Be aware of surroundings and stay up to date on forecasts. Report any downed trees blocking trails, roadways, or facilities. Check back for any updates.

This prestigious award—the highest conservation recognition presented by Scouting America—celebrates outstanding efforts in planning, leadership, ex*****on, and education related to natural resource conservation and environmental improvement.

The park’s recognition not only underscores our dedication to youth education and engagement, but it also provides an opportunity to reflect on the public benefits of previous collaborations and initiatives over the years. Construction of the Arrowhead trail system, improved accessibility at the Glade Creek and Grandview Sandbar Day Use Areas and campgrounds will leave a legacy that will benefit visitors for generations to come.
