SEASONAL TURNOVER CHANGES RESERVOIR CONDITIONS

Somervell County Water District has been notified by a few customers of slight staining of the District’s water. This staining in the water is a seasonal event that happens every fall and spring when the Wheeler Branch Reservoir goes through the process of turning over. It is a naturally occurring event that happens with most surface water supplies that temporarily affects taste, odor and water clarity. SCWD is fortunate that the effects of turning over normally only have a minor affect on the Wheeler Branch but this year the unusual amount of recent runoff combined with a dramatic sudden change in temperature caused a slight stain to our normally clear product.

Rest assured the water is treated to the same standards as always and is perfectly suitable for consumption. Our typical water clarity will resume in the next few days. Customers may refer to https://www.brazos.org/About-Us/News/Current-News/ArticleID/467 for more information on this process.

If you notice a peculiar odor on the lake this time of year, chances are it’s a process called turnover. Find out what causes it, what it means for the reservoirs and the fish population and what the prospects are for the near future.

In response to the post regarding the weeds at the Reservoir...The Wheeler Branch Reservoir is first and foremost a water supply for the County, the Somervell County Water District has to be very cautious about using herbicides to control the native weeds growing in the reservoir. The park area is only 1500 feet from the water intake to the treatment plant, meaning that it is to close to use any type of chemical in concentration strong enough to kill the weeds. Physically or mechanically removing the weeds would be cost prohibitive and impractical for the District simply for summer recreational purposes. Suggestions for a practical solution to rid the swimming area of the naturally occurring vegitation are always welcome.

Ok when are we going to finish cleaning up the rest of this, the mud you pushed up on the sides washed back down. PLEASE get the county crew that graded ,beded and did a great job first of last year. They knew what they were doing. Then send a bill to the contractors that made the mess running this water line on 2006. They were contacted before their contract was up and our tax payers Should not pay for this mess.please do not Hall any more rock or mud mess in . To this is a mess up past my property and past Roy Battles. We can't mow any of it now. Please get all that base out if the ditches and properly grade it.
