American Legion, Oliver Windell Buzan, Post 0462 Post 462 is Located in Glen Rose, Texas and is home of the "Dinosaur Capital of Texas" American Legion is a National Veterans Organization.

Texas has a long tradition of supporting Veterans and theirs families, American Legion Post 462 is no different, we support all types of programs and organizations. We are small but want to get bigger. 2016 is the revitalization campaign year for us. In you would like to join please join us by coming to one of the meetings located at the Somervell County Community Center, Glen Rose, Texas on the 4th Tuesday of Every Month or join by going to : https://www.members.legion.org/CGI-BIN/lansaweb?webapp=EDMS+webrtn=NETINTRO+ml=LANSA:XHTML+part=TAL+lang=ENG#legion-org-header

Mission: The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is the nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization, committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and continued devotion to our fellow servicemembers and veterans. Hundreds of local American Legion programs and activities strengthen the nation one community at a time. American Legion Baseball is one of the nation’s most successful amateur athletic programs, educating young people about the importance of sportsmanship, citizenship and fitness. The Operation Comfort Warriors program supports recovering wounded warriors and their families, providing them with "comfort items" and the kind of support that makes a hospital feel a little bit more like home. The Legion also raises millions of dollars in donations at the local, state and national levels to help veterans and their families during times of need and to provide college scholarship opportunities. The American Legion is a nonpartisan, not-for-profit organization with great political influence perpetuated by its grass-roots involvement in the legislation process from local districts to Capitol Hill. Legionnaires’ sense of obligation to community, state and nation drives an honest advocacy for veterans in Washington. The Legion stands behind the issues most important to the nation's veterans community, backed by resolutions passed by volunteer leadership. The American Legion’s success depends entirely on active membership, participation and volunteerism. The organization belongs to the people it serves and the communities in which it thrives.

American Legion, 6th District, Department of Texas. Thank you for the seats.

These five young men have been accepted to Boys State, June 9-14, at the University of Texas Austin.

Every year, the American Legion, Oliver Windell Buzan, Post 0462 (Dinosaur Valley Veterans) holds a contest and sends two of our best to compete at State level. This year, we had the most participation from some of the brightest boys in the county. Our local American Legion Post had to scramble to get the funds raised and allotted slots raised to send them forward! WELL DESERVED! We wish you all the best of luck!

What is Boys State?

American Legion Boys State is among the most respected and selective educational programs of government instruction for high school students. It is a participatory program where each student becomes a part of the operation of his local, county, and state government.

Boys State has been a program of The American Legion since 1935, when it organized to counter the fascist-inspired Young Pioneer Camps. The program was the idea of two Illinois Legionnaires, Hayes Kennedy and Harold Card, who organized the first Boys State at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield.

The American Legion Auxiliary sponsors a similar program for young women called Girls State.

At American Legion Boys State, participants are exposed to the rights and privileges, the duties and the responsibilities, of a franchised citizen. The training is objective and practical, with city, county, and state governments operated by the students elected to the various offices.

Fellow American Legion member ! I know him!

During the Veterans job fair at AT&T Stadium today, we met a lot of outstanding Veterans that we are truly thankful for.

We want to share the story of the gentleman in the photo with us. He is retired U.S. Army Sergeant Logan Burnett. Sergeant Burnett is a combat veteran who was critically injured in the mass shooting that occurred on Fort Hood Army Base on November 5th, 2009. Sergeant Burnett was unarmed but still charged toward the shooter in order to try and stop the killing. He was shot 3 times but continued to render aid to others and save lives. For these actions, Sergeant Burnett was awarded The Purple Heart and a Meritorious Service Medal. To date, Sergeant Burnett has had to have 29 surgeries related to the injuries he received that day. He was in a wheelchair for 1 1/2 years and couldn’t walk without some type of assistance for 3 years. Sergeant Burnett now walks unassisted and volunteers his free time to train and speak to soldiers, law enforcement, and civilians on active shooter threat response. He also works for www.HeroesSports.org which helps soldiers transition from the combat zone to civilian life. Thank you Sergeant Burnett for your sacrifice and service to our country and your continued service in our communities.

Somervell County Sheriff's Office

If you would like to attend, please let us know after you have contacted them. A great cause.

In May 2018, Somervell County Sheriff Office employees, Captain Mike Gilbert and Property / Records Clerk Katy Linnabery, shared an idea to honor fallen Game Warden Teyran “Ty” Patterson by walking across the County of Somervell. On May 30, 2007, during the recovery operation of a drowning victim, Game Warden Patterson lost his life while saving the life of a fellow Game Warden in Somervell County. Our sole goal was to ensure Ty was remembered in our community. Several people, including SCSO employees and fellow Game Wardens, made the 13.1 mile walk from the Hood County line, through Somervell County and ending at the Bosque County line.

This year, Somervell County Sheriff Alan West is reaching out to the Sheriff Offices in Hood and Johnson Counties to join the walk. Hood County has lost 3 Officers in the line of duty: Jailer James Truitt in 1886, Deputy Larry Miller in 1992, and Sgt. Lance McLean in 2013. Johnson County has lost 2 Officers in the line of duty: Deputy George Robinson Jr. in 1971 and Deputy Clifton Taylor in 2011.

Sheriff West invites all Officers, First Responders, Military Veterans, and any Citizens to walk with us this year to honor these men who have made the ultimate sacrifice. The route has changed and it’s a little bit longer (15.4 miles) and starts at the Hood County line, walking through Somervell County and ending at the Johnson County line.

The walk is planned to start at North FM 56 and end on East Hwy. 67. The Somervell County LEC, located at 750 East Gibbs Blvd. , will serve as a designated rest area for those who need it. We will have a support staff and plan to begin our walk on Saturday April 27, 2019 at 7 a.m. Please join us and help spread the word.

"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." John 15:13

The application is open to all resident of Somervell County and the Surrounding Area.

Boys State Criteria
In the actual selection of Boys State citizens, merit and ability alone are the basis for selection. Boys State is not a program for underprivileged boys nor is it a summer camp for recreation. American Legion Posts or other community-minded organizations often pay fees, or "tuition," with little to no expense to the young men.
We wish to secure equal delegate representation from all areas of the State of Texas; therefore, the Department Boys State Committee asks for one or more boy(s) from each accredited high school (public or private) to be nominated by the school to attend.
Characteristics of the "ideal" Boys Stater
To be selected for nomination or appointment as a Texas Boys State delegate, the candidate must demonstrate:
Strong academic performance (e.g., a quick study) to thrive in this fast moving program
Excellent Interpersonal skills (e.g., gets along very well with others from all backgrounds)
Exhibited leadership (e.g., a leader of leaders)
Solid Oratorical skills (e.g., a persuasive speaker and confidence shown in group settings)
In addition, the candidate must:
be a male high school student
have successfully completed his junior year
have at least one semester remaining
have not previously attended Boys State
be recommended by his school officials
have parents’/guardians’ permission to attend
be certified by the sponsoring American Legion post, and
sign the Boys State Pledge
