ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Junior Bentley Brewin knows that volleyball is about more than just winning points. For her, it is about staying positive, believing in her team and refusing to give up when things get difficult. Bentley’s biggest strength on the court is her willingness to always believe that her team can win. Her resilience and positivity help keep her and her teammates motivated, even when the game is not going their way.
When it comes to getting hyped before a game, Bentley does not need one specific song. Any random song that comes on can get her ready to play. Whether it is a favorite song or something she has never heard before, she finds a way to turn up the energy before stepping onto the court.
One of Bentley’s favorite volleyball memories happened during the Pedro Menendez game at districts last year. The calls were not going her team’s way, the score was not in their favor, and everyone was starting to get tired and frustrated. Instead of letting the situation bring her down, Bentley tried to turn the energy around. She looked at her teammates and said, “Let’s just hit them in the face.”
Not long after, Bentley got the perfect set. She took the opportunity and swiped the ball right down the block, hitting an opponent in the face and sending her to the floor. What happened next made the moment even more memorable. Bentley looked behind her to see Sadie screaming, while her teammates grabbed her and shook her in celebration. When she looked toward her coach, her coach was just as excited, celebrating the big point.
The crowd went wild, turning an already intense game into a moment Bentley and her teammates would never forget. While the point itself was memorable, the moment represented what Bentley brings to the court. Even when things are not going her way, she stays resilient, keeps a positive attitude and continues to believe in her team.
For Bentley, that mindset is what makes every game worth remembering.
