North Shore Health Department

North Shore Health Department Provides public health services for the 7 Wisconsin communities of Bayside, Brown Deer, Fox Point, Glendale, River Hills, Shorewood and Whitefish Bay.

https://linktr.ee/nshealthdept The NSHD is guided in its work by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s 10 Essential Public Health Services. These services codify the responsibilities of public health agencies in the United States to promote and protect the health of the public to prevent disease and injury. All of the NSHD’s program
and service areas incorporate the essential public hea

lth services. The NSHD has two offices, in Brown Deer and Shorewood, and residents can utilize services at either location, as well as at routinely scheduled community-based clinics. The NSHD is advised by a Board of Health with representatives from each of the seven
communities in the North Shore, as well as a medical advisor who is on staff. The Village of Brown Deer serves as the fiscal and administrative agent for the NSHD.

Lyme disease is spread by ticks and is common in Wisconsin due to our naturally wooded and grassy environments. We've been seeing an increase in ticks in recent years and expect an increase again in 2026.

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services has reported that there were 6,469 cases of Lyme disease in 2024 which is the highest on record for our state. Do to changes in our climate such as more mild/shorter winters and longer and more humid spring and summers, ticks active seasons become longer as they are more able to survive our winters.

Be prepared as we enter tick season. Swipe through this post to learn more about Lyme disease prevention trips and tick removal. Contact your doctor if you develop a rash or fever within 30 days of removing a tick or after possible exposure.

This week, Brook, one of our Environmental Health Specialists, presented to 4th-6th grade Milwaukee students at the Milwaukee Waters Investigation Event about how water travels to your home and educating them on lead pipes. Brook gives students tips on how to safely consume your tap water by using a water filter, running your water for 3 minutes before using it, and using cold water for drinking and cooking. The students asked great questions and left with more knowledge about their drinking water!

Happy National Nurses Month! We want to shout out our incredible Public Health Nurses here at the North Shore Health Department for all the incredible work they do. We asked Ashley and Jaimie about Public Health Nursing and why these choose this area of nursing.

Public Health Nursing is unique as it broadens the scope of what’s considered a patient. Here at the North Shore Health Department, all people of the North Shore of Milwaukee are the patient.

PH Nurses investigate diseases and work hard to prevent spread or control outbreaks. They also provide vaccines for children and adults in the North Shore who are uninsured or have other barriers to accessing the vaccines they need. They also have other roles like leading our Maternal and Child Health program or monitoring children who have elevated lead levels. Our nurses are also newly in charge of our internship/educational program!

Our nurses are passionate about community health and work hard to deliver services to those who otherwise have barriers to health care and family support. Show our Public Health Nurses, Ashley, Jaimie, and Karin some love!
