Still feeling the glow from YWCA Glendale and Pasadena’s Centennial Gala.

What a night. Past honorees back in the room. New friends at the table. Stories that reminded us where we began. A scholarship recipient who showed us exactly why the future is worth investing in. And a community that made it clear: the next 100 years do not start someday. They start now.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, sponsored, volunteered, gave, shared a memory, brought a friend, or helped make the evening possible. This mission has always moved forward because people choose to show up for one another.

This AAPI Heritage Month, we honor Mabel Ping-Hua Lee, a trailblazing Chinese American suffragist who fought for women’s right to vote while still a teenager.

At just 16, she helped lead New York City’s 1912 suffrage parade on horseback. Yet because of exclusionary laws, she was barred from voting herself. Her story reminds us that the fight for women’s rights has never belonged to one community alone.

Mabel’s courage, leadership, and vision continue to inspire the work for equity and justice today.

Katherine Peters Yamada has spent decades preserving the stories that define Glendale.

As a longtime local historian, former Glendale News Press columnist, and 2005 Heart and Excellence Honoree, Katherine has helped ensure that the people, places, and moments that shaped our community are not forgotten.

Her reflection on YWCA Glendale and Pasadena’s founding reminds us that this work began with women who saw inequity and acted. One hundred years later, that same spirit continues to guide our mission.

Join us Friday, May 29, as we celebrate 100 years of impact and honor the leaders, partners, and supporters helping carry this legacy forward.

As we continue counting down to YWCA Glendale and Pasadena’s Centennial Gala, we are proud to spotlight Phyllis Kim, a 2020 Heart and Excellence Honoree.

Phyllis is the executive director of CARE, Comfort Women Action for Redress and Education, where she has helped lead advocacy and public education around the history of “comfort women” survivors and the ongoing fight for justice, dignity, and remembrance.

Her work reminds us that women’s empowerment is inseparable from historical truth, human rights, and the courage to confront injustice across generations.

As Phyllis shared:

“YWCA Glendale and Pasadena has been an important community partner in the shared work of standing with women, confronting injustice, and building a more caring and equitable society. Being recognized by YWCA was deeply meaningful to me because it connected my work for historical justice for ‘comfort women’ survivors with the broader struggle for women’s dignity and human rights. One hundred years of this work is truly worth celebrating, and it reminds us why continued support for YWCA matters.”

As we celebrate 100 years of YWCA Glendale and Pasadena, we are honored to recognize past honorees whose leadership continues to reflect the heart of our mission.
