Washington Elementary School District WESD is the largest elementary school district in Arizona with 33 schools serving 18,000 students.

- 19 K-6 schools
- 7 K-8 schools
- 5 middle/junior high schools
- 1 K-5 school
- 1 online 7/8 school

Approximately 3,000 employees:
- approx. 1,500 teachers
- approx. 1,400 support staff
- approx. 70 administrators

The WESD is a "B" district, according to the Arizona Department of Education. Open enrollment and full-day kindergarten opportuni

ties are available at all schools. Gifted Services are offered at all schools, with approximately 1,879 students being challenged beyond the traditional classroom setting, including two self-contained programs that serve highly gifted students. Music, art, and physical education programs are offered in all District schools. Title I supplemental services for students in need of additional academic assistance are available at 27 schools. Special Education services are provided for approximately 15 percent of the student population. A District-wide English Language Development Program supports the 50 different languages that are represented in our schools.

21st Century Grants provide after-school enrichment programs at 26 schools. WESD has the largest number of these grant programs in Arizona. Approximately 3,200 students gain extra academic support through WESD summer school programs. KidSpace Extended Day Care programs are on 23 school campuses in the WESD. KidSpace is a before- and after-school program that provides high quality, school-age care while supplementing learning. Thirty-six sections of Head Start are provided for 588 4-year-old children and their families.

We’re wrapping up our look at this summer’s projects with a peek inside Lakeview Elementary School, where a renovated front office has created a more secure, welcoming and functional space for students, families and staff.

The updated front entry now features a secure lobby and welcoming murals, while inside, the renovations include:

🏫 Remodeled administrative, health tech and front office spaces

💼 A larger professional development room

🎨 Colorful new murals that bring a warm, welcoming feel to the front entryway

It’s more than a fresh new look – it’s a space designed to make everyone who walks through the doors feel welcome and safe.

A big thank you to everyone who helped bring these summer projects to life across WESD! We’ve loved showing you a few of the improvements our schools are enjoying as we begin a new school year. 💙❤

🔬 Science is happening all across WESD! 🧲💻

We’ve noticed so many of our schools sharing the hands-on, engaging science happening in classrooms – and we’re loving it!

From exploring magnets and the properties of matter to coding, experimenting and problem-solving, our K–8 students are getting curious, asking questions and learning by doing.

Science isn’t just something students read about – it’s something they experience! And judging by the smiles, discoveries and “aha!” moments we’re seeing, our students are loving every minute of it. 🚀🧪

📚 September is Attendance Awareness Month! A great school year starts with a simple habit: being in school, on time, every day! 💙❤️

When students attend school regularly, they have more opportunities to learn, connect with their teachers and classmates, and be part of everything happening in their school community. That’s why this year’s attendance message is:

🌟 We Excel by Showing up Daily! 🌟

Every day matters – and absences can add up. Missing just two days of school each month can put a student on the path toward chronic absenteeism, which is generally defined as missing 10% or more of the school year, for any reason.

Families can help build strong attendance habits by:

⏰ Establishing consistent bedtime and morning routines

🎒 Getting backpacks, clothes and other essentials ready the night before

📅 Planning appointments and vacations around the school calendar, whenever possible

❤️ Helping children stay healthy and ready to learn

Throughout September, we’ll be sharing tips and resources to help WESD families make attendance a priority.

Today brought some very happy surprises to Janelle Sonchik at Chaparral Elementary School, Kennedy Bullock at Moon Mountain Elementary and Andrea Haack at Mountain Sky Junior High! Each teacher was surprised with a $500 prepaid card through the Arizona Public Service - APS Supply My Class program. 🥳

The APS Supply My Class program recognizes teachers for the important work they do by providing 500 randomly selected K–12 teachers in the APS service territory with $500 to use toward supplies, materials and other resources that can enhance their classrooms and support their students.

Since the program began, more than 5,500 teachers have received funds to bring additional resources and opportunities into their classrooms.

We’re so excited to celebrate Andrea, Kennedy and Janelle – and grateful to APS for investing in teachers and helping them add a little something extra to the learning experience for their students! ❤️💙📚✏️

A huge THANK YOU to the local businesses, faith-based partners and parent organizations who have supported our schools as we’ve kicked off the new year. 🙌

Arizona PBIS Coalition has recognized Arroyo School with a Level 3: Tier 1 and 2 Fidelity Award for its successful implementation of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)! 🌟🎉

At Arroyo, students and staff work together every day to Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be Responsible – expectations that help create a positive, proactive and supportive school culture where students can thrive.

Last week, Chaparral Elementary School celebrated the ribbon cutting of its new Sparky Wellness Room – a welcoming space designed to support the whole child and give students a place to pause, refocus and get ready to learn. 💙

Principal Molly Boyer welcomed guests and shared the vision behind the room, while school social worker Melissa Paige highlighted the different spaces designed to support students in different ways, including the Yoga Zone, Sensory Zone, Mindful Coloring area, Emotional Regulation Zone and Calming Corner.

We’re especially grateful to the Sherwin-Williams team at 28th Drive and Cactus, who donated $2,700 in supplies and equipment and volunteered their time to paint the room with beautiful collages that reinforce social-emotional learning and support.

Superintendent Dr. Michael Robert also thanked the Sherwin-Williams team and everyone who helped bring this vision to life. Student representatives from the Sparky Wolf Pack joined in the celebration, too!

Students are getting their first look at the space this week, and we’re excited to see how this special room will support our Sparky scholars.

Thank you to everyone who helped create a space where students can pause, refocus and get ready to learn! ❤💙🐺
