Washington Elementary School District WESD is the largest elementary school district in Arizona with 33 schools serving 18,000 students.

33 schools comprise the WESD:
- 19 K-6 schools
- 7 K-8 schools
- 5 middle/junior high schools
- 1 K-5 school
- 1 online 7/8 school

Approximately 3,000 employees:
- approx. 1,500 teachers
- approx. 1,400 support staff
- approx. 70 administrators

The WESD is a "B" district, according to the Arizona Department of Education. Open enrollment and full-day kindergarten opportunities are available at all schools. Gifted Services are offered at all schools, with approximately 1,879 students being challenged beyond the traditional classroom setting, including two self-contained programs that serve highly gifted students. Music, art, and physical education programs are offered in all District schools. Title I supplemental services for students in need of additional academic assistance are available at 27 schools. Special Education services are provided for approximately 15 percent of the student population. A District-wide English Language Development Program supports the 50 different languages that are represented in our schools.

21st Century Grants provide after-school enrichment programs at 26 schools. WESD has the largest number of these grant programs in Arizona. Approximately 3,200 students gain extra academic support through WESD summer school programs. KidSpace Extended Day Care programs are on 23 school campuses in the WESD. KidSpace is a before- and after-school program that provides high quality, school-age care while supplementing learning. Thirty-six sections of Head Start are provided for 588 4-year-old children and their families.

Join our community partners Washington Park Neighborhood, Councilwoman Betty Guardado and the City of Phoenix, AZ USA for the annual Family Fright Night and Movie in the Park event this Saturday, Oct. 17, from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Washington Activity Center, located at 2240 W. Citrus Way!

Bring the whole family for an evening of fun featuring costume contests, candy, prizes, games, food trucks and more! Be sure to stop by the WESD table to say hello!

Earlier this month, fourth-grade students at Alta Vista Elementary welcomed a special guest, Collin Smith from Phoenix Rising Football Club! ⚽️✨

Collin visited with students to discuss the importance of literacy and education, read to the entire fourth grade and answer their questions. He also signed bookmarks for students to take home as a special keepsake.

A big thank-you to Mrs. Miramontes, Alta Vista’s Library and Media Specialist, for organizing this wonderful opportunity, and to Collin for inspiring students to embrace reading and reminding them that success on the field begins with success in the classroom!

Mountain View School celebrated an exciting literacy milestone last week as Delivering Dreams of Arizona’s Book Gifts program distributed its 500,000th book into the community! 📚✨

During a special visit to Mountain View, all students received free books selected specifically for their grade level. Third grader Yaritza had the honor of receiving the program’s 500,000th book during the distribution in Autumn Carpenter’s third grade class. The celebration was also featured in a live broadcast with azfamily 3TV CBS 5: https://www.azfamily.com/2026/10/09/phoenix-third-grader-gets-500000th-book-delivering-dreams-arizona/.

A special thank-you to Principal Annie Diaz for representing Mountain View during the interview and to Karen O’Keefe for her continued dedication to promoting literacy and ensuring students have books of their own to enjoy.

This past Friday, the WESD Administrative Center honored employees who have dedicated five, 10, 15, 20, 30 and even 50 years of service to the District at the annual Years of Service Luncheon!

Superintendent Dr. Michael Robert and fellow Administrative Center employees joined in recognizing these outstanding milestones and expressing appreciation for the dedication, hard work and lasting impact of our honorees.

We are proud to conclude our September 2026 Employee of the Month spotlights today by honoring Terry Woodyard, custodian at Abraham Lincoln Traditional School! 🌟

Since joining his school this year, Terry has already made a wonderful and lasting impression on the entire campus community. He is a happy, friendly and kind person who brings enthusiasm, positivity and a willingness to go above and beyond to everything he does. Terry is quick to respond whenever something is needed and is always willing to help resolve problems or lend a hand. His genuine care for the comfort, wellbeing and support of staff does not go unnoticed. Terry’s dependability, responsibility and strong work ethic are evident every day. He is always on the move, taking care of the many tasks that help keep the campus safe, clean, comfortable and prepared for students and staff. Students regularly see Terry working diligently in the cafeteria during lunch. He makes sure the area is clean and ready for the next class by cleaning the sinks, restocking paper towel holders and sweeping away trash and food. Additionally, Terry works throughout the campus, quietly completing the many important jobs that help the school run smoothly. Terry’s colleagues describe him as dependable, hardworking and enthusiastic.

Oct. 12 is Indigenous Peoples Day, a time to recognize and honor the histories, cultures, traditions and lasting contributions of Indigenous peoples and communities.

At the WESD, we recognize and celebrate the Native American students, staff and families who are an important part of our school communities. Their experiences, perspectives and cultural traditions enrich our District and contribute to the strength of the .

We encourage our community to continue learning about and celebrating Indigenous cultures and voices, today and every day.

That’s a wrap on the first quarter of the 2026-2027 school year! 🎉

It’s been a busy and exciting start across the WESD! Over the past few months, Dr. Robert has visited schools and classrooms, connected with community members at neighborhood association meetings, and joined in the fun at his first SUPER Kids and SUPER Staff event and Kiwanis Walk-a-thon!

So, what’s on the horizon after fall break? In his latest update, Dr. Robert highlights upcoming parent/teacher conferences, our first Business Advisory Team meeting, Love Our Schools Day and more. He also provides information about our Maintenance and Operations Budget Override Election taking place in November.

Today’s September 2026 Employee of the Month spotlight is of Rene McClay, Project Potential Gifted teacher at Roadrunner Elementary and Washington Elementary! 🌟

Rene consistently embodies the vision of “achieving excellence for every child, every day, every opportunity” through her compassionate advocacy and dedication to equitable opportunities. Her Project Potential Gifted students look forward to her classes each week and readily identify them as a favorite part of their school experience. Rene’s ability to build meaningful relationships, understand each student as an individual, and support their academic, social, and emotional needs is truly exceptional. Her influence extends far beyond her classrooms at two schools. Rene generously shares her knowledge, resources, and ideas with Project Potential teammates and gifted educators across the district, strengthening the entire gifted education program. Her careful attention and advocacy have also helped identify gifted students from populations that might otherwise have been underrepresented. Because of Rene’s persistence and follow-through, students have gained access to programs designed to nurture their advanced learning needs and help them reach their potential. Others also appreciate the special sense of connection she creates through traditions such as her weekly “Did You Know?” board, honoring a former student while inspiring curiosity and celebrating the lasting impact of every child. Rene’s colleagues describe her as caring, conscientious and an advocate.
