Thunderbird pilots is about the men and women who worked and flew as instructors and cadets at Thunderbird Field I, II, Falcon and Sky Harbor Fields in and around Phoenix, Arizona from 1941-1945. Our goal is share names, pictures and historical information about this historical period in aviation history.

I had the honor and privilege to sit down and talk "pilot to pilot" with Capt. Jerry Yellin, former WWII, P-51 Combat Veteran with 19 missions in support of the US efforts over Iwo Jima and Japan.

Jerry was 18 y.o. when he enlisted in the Army Air Corp and is the only surviving cadet that I'm aware of, who trained at Thunderbird Field II. I'm currently writing and will add Capt. Yellin's story to my book "The Pilots of Thunderbird Field". Jerry has several books available online and is release his latest book called "The Last Fighter Pilot" on 1 Aug. '17.

Jerry is wearing my lamb skin gloves given to me by former RAF pilot Jez Hopkinson. These gloves have special meaning to me as wore them on my combat support missions over Iraq. We shared stories about training, tactics, combat, the future of fighters, just to name a few topics..
