A father warned the court.
The system laughed.
His son died in foster care.
This is Jacob Haataja.
Jacob was 14 years old when he died while in foster care in Minnesota.
According to his father, Virgil, he begged the court, CPS, and the Guardian ad Litem to drug-test the foster home he believed was unsafe.
He says his warnings were dismissed.
He says the courtroom laughed.
No testing was done.
Weeks later, Jacob was dead.
This is not presented as proven fact — it is a father’s sworn account, now recorded in a full interview. And it raises questions no system should be allowed to ignore:
• Why were a parent’s safety concerns dismissed?
• Why was no investigation done when drugs were alleged in a foster home?
• Who is accountable when a child dies in state custody?
Jacob should be 19 years old today.
No family should ever have to bury their child because the system refused to listen.
Wadena County families deserve transparency.
Minnesota children deserve better.
And Jacob deserved to come home.
All donations made to Father’s Advocacy Network through February 15th, 2026 will go directly toward:
• Pushing Jacob’s story for visibility and accountability in Wadena County and Otter Tail County
• Purchasing a proper urn for Jacob’s remains, so he is no longer kept in a cardboard box
This is about truth, dignity, and making sure a child’s death is not ignored or forgotten.
If you’re able to help — even in a small way — it makes a real difference.
