Automatic Fire Alarm Upgraded to Building Response at Lexus of Chester Springs

Shortly after 5:00 a.m., the Ludwigs Corner Fire Company was dispatched to the Lexus of Chester Springs dealership on Pottstown Pike for an automatic fire alarm.

Deputy 73 and Assistant 73 responded immediately following dispatch, with Engine 73-1 going en route shortly thereafter. Deputy 73 arrived first and reported normal conditions from the front of the single-story commercial building. An officer from the Upper Uwchlan Police Department, who was already on scene, discovered a smoke condition in the rear of the building and relayed that information through Chester County 911.

Based on the updated report, Deputy 73 requested the alarm be upgraded, bringing additional resources from East Brandywine, East Whiteland, Glen Moore, Kimberton, Lionville, Norco, Ridge, and West Whiteland Fire Companies, along with Uwchlan Ambulance. Deputy 73 established Lexus Command.

As Engine 73-1 arrived, crews began working to gain access to the building and stretched a handline in preparation for any potential fire conditions. Utilizing the building's Knox Box system, firefighters were able to access the dealership without causing any damage.

Once inside, crews encountered smoke moving through the HVAC system and began investigating the source. The interior team requested the first-arriving aerial apparatus to access the roof and investigate a possible mechanical issue involving the HVAC equipment. Engine 73-5 arrived and laid a supply line to Engine 73-1, while Ladder 6 arrived as the first-due aerial and deployed personnel to the roof.

As mutual aid companies arrived, crews assisted with isolating the affected area and ventilating the rear portion of the building, which had filled with smoke. Firefighters successfully ventilated the structure and prevented additional smoke from spreading throughout the dealership.

The source of the smoke was ultimately traced to a mechanical issue . No fire was found, and no flames were present at any point during the incident. As conditions improved and the situation was brought under control, mutual aid companies were released from the scene. LCFC personnel remained on location to complete operations before clearing shortly after 7:00 a.m.

While many automatic fire alarm activations are ultimately determined to be false alarms or minor issues, this incident serves as an important reminder of why every alarm is treated seriously. What initially appeared to be a routine alarm response quickly escalated into a building filled with smoke, requiring a coordinated response from multiple agencies to investigate, ventilate, and mitigate the hazard.

Ludwigs Corner Fire Company would like to thank all of our mutual aid partners for their assistance during this incident.

Engine 73-5 Assists on Two Working Fires

On back-to-back days, Engine 73-5 was dispatched to assist mutual aid companies on working fires. It started on Thursday, May 21, when Engine 73-5 was dispatched just before noon as part of the first alarm tanker task force to assist Berks County Station 7 (Birdsboro-Union) on a working garage fire. First arriving crews arrived to find a 50x50 building that was fully involved. Engine 73-5 supplied the fire ground operations with 3,500 gallons of water and operated on-scene for approximately 3 hours before clearing and returning to Chester County.

On Friday, May 22, just after 5:30 p.m., Engine 73-5 was alerted as part of the working fire dispatch to assist Station 64 (Norco Fire Company) with a working apartment building fire. Engine 73-5 made the response with a crew of 5 and stood-by on-scene for approximately 40 minutes before being released by Command.

LCFC Handles First Brush Fire of the Season

Just before 5:00 p.m. on Monday evening, LCFC was dispatched to the 1600 block of Fairview Road in East Nantmeal Township for a brush fire. Chief 73 and Assistant 73 responded to the call and were advised of a controlled burn that had spread to the field. While on the way, Assistant 73 could see smoke from Route 401 and requested two additional brush trucks and two additional tankers to be added to the response. This brought a brush truck from Ridge Fire Company, a brush truck and tanker from Glen Moore Fire Company, and a tanker from Lionville Fire Company to support the incident.

Assistant 73 arrived and established Fairview Road Command, while Chief 73 managed operations. Brush 73 was the first fire apparatus to arrive and began attacking the fire. Engine 73-1 arrived next and its crew deployed two 1.75-inch hoses to assist with the fire attack. Engine 73-5 arrived soon after and supplied Engine 73-1 with water.

The brush trucks from Glen Moore and Ridge Fire Company arrived shortly after and helped with fire suppression efforts. Engine 47-5 was used to refill the brush trucks. Shortly after the arrival of these units, the fire was brought under control. Approximately two acres burned, and LCFC along with mutual aid companies cleared the scene about 30 minutes later.

Working Fire in East Nantmeal Township

At approximately 4:15 p.m., LCFC volunteers and mutual aid partners were dispatched to the 200 block of Sweet Springs Road in East Nantmeal Township for a house fire. The initial report stated that the house was on fire, and a subsequent update from the 911 center indicated smoke was coming from the attic. The residents evacuated the home, and crews confirmed there was fire in the attic.

Glen Moore’s Fire Chief was the first fire officer to arrive and confirmed the situation. He requested a working fire dispatch and assumed command until Chief 73 arrived. Chief 73, Assistant 73, and Deputy 73 reached the scene together shortly after Chief 48. Chief 73 took command, Deputy 73 handled operations, and Assistant 73 alongside Chief 48 managed fire suppression.

During a 360 of the house, Deputy 73 reported visible fire through the roof on the rear (Charlie) side. Chief 73 requested two additional tankers based on this information. Engine 48-2 laid a supply line from Fairview Road and positioned at the front of the house, while Engine 73-5 set up at the rear. Assistant 73, Chief 48, and Captain 48 stretched a hose line to the Charlie side bedroom for fire attack. Simultaneously, the crew from 73-5 extended a second hose line up the deck steps on the Charlie side for additional fire attack. When the crew from 73-2 arrived, they assisted with opening the ceiling so firefighters could access and extinguish the fire in the attic. Engine 48-5 arrived and completed the supply line from Fairview Road. Engine 69-5 arrived and supplied 48-5

Tower 47 was assigned to open a vent hole in the roof. The tower crew used ground ladders to access the roof and perform ventilation. Ridge Fire Company crews assisted with opening walls and ceilings to locate any remaining fire and used salvage tarps to protect belongings from further damage.

East Brandywine crews set up for rapid intervention team (RIT) operations and also helped open the Bravo side wall near the roof peak to improve ventilation and check for fire spread.

After Chief 73 placed the fire under control, all crews except those from LCFC and Glen Moore were released. Firefighters worked to extinguish remaining hot spots in the attic. Engine 48-5 refilled water at the nearest hydrant, and crews began repacking hose lines and other equipment. LCFC crews were the last to leave the scene, going available around 7:30 p.m.

While operating on scene, Honey Brook Elverson EMS along with Tower Health Medic 93 were our EMS stand by and rehab unit.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Chester County Fire Marshal’s office.

LCFC thanks the West Whiteland Fire Company for covering the area during the incident and for helping with cleanup of tools, hose, and air packs.
