Our founder, C.F. Koehnen, around 1910.

Before he became a beekeeper, he was a commercial catfisher. In 1907, he traded some of his catch with a local beekeeper, tasted fresh honey for the first time, and the rest is history.

One thing that always makes us smile about this photo: he fished in a three piece suit.

You won’t catch any of us doing that today, but we still carry the same pride in our work that he did over a century ago.

Hard work. Quality. Integrity. Those values have never gone out of style. 🍯

Decades have passed since this photo was taken, and our company has grown in ways C.F. Koehnen could only imagine. Today, we are proud to be C.F. Koehnen & Sons. More importantly, we are a family. Through generations, through change, and through every season, family has remained at the heart of everything we do.

Suiting up for the work that matters most.

At Cf Koehnen & Sons, every hive starts with care. Through clear communication, hands on stewardship, and strong hive management, we work every day to keep our colonies healthy and our partnerships strong. It’s work built on trust, consistency, and respect for the bees, the land, and the people who depend on them season after season.

70 years between these two photos and a whole lot of change in between.

Back in the late 1950s, every hive was moved by hand. No forklifts, smaller trucks, rougher rides, slower roads, and long days limited by pure human strength. Parked in front of the old ranch house that served as the company office at the time, this fleet included several 1940s trucks and our beloved 1952 truck, better known in the family simply as “the 52.” Today it’s fully restored and still comes out for special events.

That same ranch house has been home to generations of family members who have worked this ranch over the years.

Fast forward to today and the fleet looks a little different. Bigger trucks, better suspension, better tires, creature comforts, and forklifts that make moving bees faster, safer, and a whole lot easier.

Different trucks. Same work ethic. Same family. Same bees.

Built the way nature intended 🐝

Want to know how we produce a superior queen? It starts right here with our house made wax queen cell cups. No plastic, no shortcuts. Just wax formed directly onto wood, the way bees naturally build.

Some people have asked about photos showing 60 out of 60 queen takes and wondered if cells were swapped. In our operation, that can’t actually happen. These wax cups are molded directly to the wood, so the queen cell raised is the same one you see from start to finish.

We believe the best results come from working with nature, paying attention to the details, and respecting the process. That commitment is what produces consistent quality.

A black and white moment from years gone by, queens being caged by hand just as they were for generations before. The date may be unknown, but the work tells the story.

For more than 100 years, our family has been raising bees and caring for queens with the same steady hands, patience, and attention to detail. Equipment has changed, methods have evolved, but some things never change. Good stock, careful work, and pride in what you do will always matter.
