A strong low pressure system lifting up from the Gulf of Alaska will bring elevated southeasterly winds to many locations across Southcentral AK through tonight. Higher elevations and favorable gaps such as Turnagain Arm, Knik River valley, and the Copper River valley will be especially susceptible to gusty conditions. Here is a graphic displaying forecasted wind gusts from 7 PM - 10 PM this evening:

NRCS has published the first statewide snowpack report for 2024: The Alaska snowpack on February 1, 2024, is robust. Other than rain-soaked parts of Southeast Alaska and a few outlier stations in the northern reaches of the State, all measurements are Normal to well above Normal for the date. In the Copper River Basin and the stations around Anchorage snowpack is approaching historic.

For those affected by the 2023 Spring Flooding here within the Copper River Valley, FEMA is in Glennallen today and tomorrow, (Wednesday - Thursday) to help with recovery. They are located at Old Paths Baptist Church, 188.9 Glenn Hwy, and will be assisting with registration and answering any questions concerning federal Financial assistance. Also, Small Business Administration for those desiring assistance with a small business loan.

🔥 Warmer and drier conditions are expected over the next few days, as southeasterly gap winds redevelop Monday across localized areas, favoring the Copper River and Matanuska Valleys. Fire weather conditions will be briefly favored before conditions trend wet again.

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT
ISSUED: 1:47 PM MAY. 31, 2023 – NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE..Gulkana River Rises Expected...

Renewed river rises are expected on the Gulkana River through the
next few days based on runoff from recent precipitation. River
levels will be near bankfull and some flooding of low areas and
rural roads near the river will be possible, as water routes
through the system.

The declaration means residents should have an easier time getting help to recover from spring floods that have decimated portions of rural towns and villages across Alaska.

UPDATED INFOMATION
Meeting Location CHANGE: This public meeting will now take place at the Murdock Center at the old Bible College. We will join forces with DOT and have a combined public meeting.

On Wednesday, May 24th at 5:30pm, The State of Alaska Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management is holding a public meeting for those affected by the 2023 Glennallen Flood. Please join us to discuss individual assistance programs, small business administration disaster loans and long-term recovery efforts for the community.

This will be both an online and in-person meeting. We hold the meeting at the old Bible College Murdoch Center and Via Zoom, link provided.

The Disaster Assistance Center will facilitate this meeting. Jeremy Zidek, Public Information Officer, and Mike Macans, Individual Assistance Branch Chief, will explain the processes and be available to answer any question during this meeting. They will remain in the Glennallen area and conduct assessments on Thursday May 25th.
