Our thoughts and prayers go out to Sergeant Zach Burns, his Family, the Carbon County Sheriffs Department, as well as the entire Baggs/Carbon County Community.

PRESS RELEASE: OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING UPDATE: SERGEANT ZACH BURNS

On Monday, June 8th, 2026, the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office received a call for a man with a gun in Baggs, Wyoming, near the Colorado state line.

Sergeant Zach Burns was in the area and responded immediately. Dispatchers relayed the suspect vehicle information to Sergeant Burns.

Sergeant Burns located the suspect vehicle and initiated a traffic stop in front of a small apartment complex in Baggs.

Upon coming to a stop, the suspect immediately exited his vehicle and opened fire on Sergeant Burns with a semi-automatic rifle. Sergeant Burns was struck in the neck, arm, and hip.

The suspect proceeded to set fire to the apartment building before getting back in his vehicle and fleeing northbound on Highway 789.

Residents of Baggs immediately rushed to provide aid to Sergeant Burns until EMS crews could arrive, providing cover and emergency wound treatment.

Sergeant Burns was transported via helicopter to a trauma center in Colorado where he remains in critical condition.

The suspect was killed in a shootout with Carbon County Deputies on Highway 789 after fleeing the scene. This investigation is ongoing and being conducted by the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation.

Our hearts are with Sergeant Burns and his family, as well as all of our deputies, troopers, Baggs residents, and partner agencies who assisted.

As Police Week begins, we ask that you take a moment to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of those we serve. Let their selfless sacrifice never be forgotten. We would also like to recognize all of those who still put on their badge and hit the street every day in the service of others.

We were able to take part in the Early Childhood Development Centers’ touch a truck event! The kids were able to tour and learn about a variety of not only emergency vehicles but also some heavy equipment and some all around neat custom cars!

SRO Pierce was given a lifesaving award during tonight’s council meeting for his efforts on April 8, 2026. Officer Pierce responded while off duty to aid his neighbors infant son who was not breathing. His actions, along with the infants grandmothers, were credited with saving his life. Officer Pierce chose to put the needs of our citizens before his own. These actions align perfectly with the values of our department and deserve recognition. Thank you Officer Pierce!

• Verify court matters directly through official court contacts
• Report suspicious activity to local law enforcement

Official -looking logos, court names, and urgent language appearing to be legitimate are often used by scammers. If you experience these types of notifications, contact the the agency involved, by directly using publicly listed phone numbers or websites.

We were able to participate in two outreach events this week. Students from both Douglas and Glenrock were given a chance to meet and speak with representatives from many different career fields. We were glad to represent our Department and talk about our experiences. Ghost enjoyed the opportunity for meeting some new people and convincing them to stand and listen.

We would like to call some attention to our Communications Division, as this week is Communications Appreciation Week. Though we may be a bit biased, we think our team is Top Notch! When you're facing the worst situations, these folks stay calm and ensure you get the help you need. They rarely get the thanks they deserve, but this week, please help us show them our thanks for being the voice on the other end of the line.
