Boy Scout Troop 138

Boy Scout Troop 138 Boy Scout Troop 138 Troop 138, we’re serious about Scouting. You do not have to be a current, or former, Cub Scout to join Boy Scouts.

If you are looking for a Troop that is:

committed to advancement
correctly using the Patrol Method
small enough in size that everyone counts
organized and motivated
active year-round
developing and training its leadership..then 138 is the Troop for you. You just need the desire for adventure. We attend Summer Camp at Seven Ranges Scout Reservation in Ohio, which is nationally recognized for its

Pipestone Honors Program and its dedicated staff. Our Scouts plan, organize and manage most of the Troop activities and trips. This gives each Scout responsibilities and opportunities... which is what sets us apart from most area troops.

Remember the acronym MADBuck when identifying trees during Winter.

"MADBuck" might sound like the name of an angry, snorting stag you might want to avoid while walking in the woods...as you should!...but it is also an acronym to help you recall how to identify trees during winter, when they're bare of leaves.

When you're walking on our preserves in winter, note the arrangement of twigs on a tree's branches. Most species have their twigs arranged in an ALTERNATE pattern, such as the shagbark hickory; however, some trees, such as species of maples, ashes, dogwoods and buckeyes, grow their twigs in an OPPOSITE arrangement.

Use the first letter from each of these groups to remember “MADBuck.”

Note: This rule also works for species of shrubs in those groups, except for the alternate-leaved dogwood, which is such an oddity that its alternate arrangement is even expressed in its scientific name: Cornus alternifolia.

Troop 138 scouts working hard at maintaining trails at Deer Lakes Park. The trails were manually graded to allow for better water runoff and less trail erosion. Thank you scouts, parents, and Allegheny County Parks Rangers for helping with this service project.
