The cost of readiness is high for our fire departments-- whether they are volunteer or paid.

Private equity is making this problem worse by buying up and consolidating the companies that build and sell fire trucks, raising prices and slowing the supply chain across the country. That means fire trucks are more expensive for departments and taxpayers, and they take much longer to put into service.

I'm grateful to all of the firefighters and other experts who came to testify at this Veterans Affairs and Emergency Prepareness hearing to educate us further on this issue, especially Tim Leech, Vice President of Pittsburgh Fire Fighters.

On June 19 - Juneteenth - we commemorate the end of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth is a celebration, but we acknowledge that the struggle for racial equality continues, and the ramifications of slavery are still felt today.

Earlier this month, I joined Pittsburgh Action Against R**e (PAAR) and advocates from across the state for their One Year Later Rally.

Last year, advocates gathered to sound the alarm about the need to increase funding for r**e crisis centers across the state. Not only did survivors get flat funded last year, but they also got a budget that was 135 days late, leaving our crisis centers in financial crisis.

We all deserve safety. But until we can have that, we need to fund the incredible services provided by our Pennsylvania r**e crisis centers.

The Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit put money back in working families' pockets this past tax season. But it needs an update to make sure that it continues to do so.

I'm joining my colleagues Senator Maria Collett, Senator Tina Tartaglione and Senator Katie Muth on legislation that aligns the federal and PA Child and Dependent Care Tax Credits going forward. This will ensure that families get back the most money while making taxes a little simpler.

Our working families, especially our working moms, already have a full to do list. I’m glad we can make this rebate a little more straightforward and accessible for those who need it most.

Thank you to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank for inviting me to join this year's Neighbor Leadership Council's Anti-Hunger Policy Luncheon. The Neighbor Leadership Council meets monthly to learn how to advocate to reduce food insecurity and elevate the voices of our neighbors.

We had a great discussion about food insecurity, housing needs, healthcare access, utility costs, and transportation access, and how all of these economic drivers intersect. I'm incredibly grateful for their advocacy, and for their community-led solutions.

Happy Autistic Pride Day! Autistic Pride Day celebrates autistic people, their experiences, strength, and the value of neurodiversity. Created by autistic people in 2005, today encourages pride in autistic identity and recognizes that autism is not something that needs to be "fixed." The day also highlights the challenges autistic people face due to stigma and misunderstanding. It is a reminder to celebrate autistic voices, promote acceptance, and work toward a world where everyone is respected and supported for who they are.

Local organization Evolve Coaching is working to provide a permanent supportive space by building an Inclusion Center. I was happy to support Evolve in receiving state RCAP funding for this project. When complete, this training space and media center will allow Evolve to support Autistic and neurodivergent individuals as they work towards meeting their own, self-defined goals–whether in education, employment, creative expression, or independent living.

This Inclusion Center will give members of Pittsburgh’s neurodiverse community a place to learn, grow, and dream together. It will also serve as a model for active inclusivity for everyone across the greater Pittsburgh area.

I was grateful to participate in Shaler Hampton EMS 's first ever Annual Community Leaders Briefing, attended by their Board of Directors, staff, and other local elected leaders. The briefing was full of great information on the work that SHEMS is doing in our communities, and I was especially touched by the stories that the staff shared about their experiences. They do phenomenal, lifesaving work and we're deeply grateful for the services they provide.
