..RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 5 PM THIS AFTERNOON TO 10 AM PDT THURSDAY FOR ABUNDANT LIGHTNING FOR FIRE WEATHER ZONES WA691 AND WA694...

The National Weather Service in Pendleton has issued a Red Flag Warning for abundant lightning, which is in effect from 5 PM this afternoon to 10 AM PDT Thursday.

* AFFECTED AREA...Fire Weather Zones 691 Lower Columbia Basin of Washington and 694 Yakama Alpine District.

* TIMING...From 5 PM this afternoon to 10 AM PDT Thursday.

* IMPACTS...Any fire that develops will catch and spread quickly. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

* THUNDERSTORMS...Rain amounts will range from 0.05 to 0.15 inches, with stronger storms capable of producing 0.25 inches or more.

* OUTFLOW WINDS...25 to 45 mph, locally higher.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.

..A STRONG THUNDERSTORM WILL IMPACT WEST CENTRAL YAKIMA COUNTY THROUGH 330 PM PDT...

At 258 PM PDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm over northwestern Yakama Reservation, or 22 miles southeast of Packwood. This thunderstorm was nearly stationary.

HAZARD...Wind gusts up to 50 mph and half inch hail.

SOURCE...Radar indicated.

IMPACT...Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor hail damage to vegetation is possible.

This storm will remain over mainly rural areas of west central Yakima County.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building.

Torrential rainfall is also occurring with this storm and may lead to localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways.

It’s likely you will see smoke in the area tomorrow and through the weekend. This is a controlled prescribed fire. These prescribed fires are essential for preventing larger, uncontrolled wildfires by clearing out brush and overgrowth. Please do not call 911 about the smoke. Our local dispatch is aware of the burn and we need to keep the 911 lines open for emergencies. Thank you for your support and understanding!

Prescribed burn season is here! MARS is excited to support Columbia Land Trust with two prescribed burns at the Bear Creek Natural Area north of Glenwood on Thursday and Friday.
Smoke is expected to be visible from Glenwood.

These burns are part of ongoing efforts to reduce wildfire risk, improve habitat, and bolster ecosystem health in our fire-adapted forests. Burn plans have been reviewed and approved by the Washington Department of Natural Resources and are scheduled to align with weather conditions that fall within the parameters of our burn permits, accomplish desired burn outcomes, and cause minimal impacts to the public. If conditions change we will modify our plans or call off the burn all together.

Please be cautious when burning. If it’s windy and warm outside, it’s not a good time to burn. As soon as we hear about a burn ban, we will let you know.

Over the past few weeks, Klickiat County Fire Districts and Departments, as well as the Washington DNR have been called out to several wildfires within Klickitat County.

The Klickitat County Department of Emergency Management asks that everyone please plan ahead, and consider the current and forecasted weather conditions before conducting any Debris Burning activities.

In some emergencies, speaking my not be safe or possible. Telecommunicators are trained to handle such situations.

If you can't speak:
Remain on the line if it is safe to do so
Pretend you are talking to a friend
Use Text to 911
Respond to questions with yes/no if safe to do so
Provide your location as soon as you can
Leave the line open so the Telecommunicator can try to gain information

Telecommunicators will listen for background noises and ask specific questions to initiate help while prioritizing your safety.

Your safety is our top priority. We will work with you to ensure assistance arrives.

Last night, for our Structure Fire Search and Rescue training, our fire crew casually transformed the fire station into a haunted maze.

Let’s paint you a picture, shall we:

The lights were out and our masks blacked out for extra measure. The vibe: “we should know this place like the back of our hands, but clearly do not!” 🚒

The walls, who have always been there, were suddenly like, “Boo!” as everyone got startled by them anyway. 👻🫨

Then voices in the dark: “I think we came from this way?” and “Who’s got my leg??”, followed by confident disagreements from all different directions. 🦵🏼🧭

The mannequin victim hung out patiently like, “take your time, I’ll just lay here.” 😴✨

At least one firefighter became deeply acquainted with a piece of furniture they definitely walk past every day. 🤝🪑

The crew collectively discovered that crawling in the dark turns even the most familiar building into a full identity crisis. 🫠

All joking aside, our teamwork showed up strong! 💪🏼Through the mild chaos, we find our victim and everyone made it out safely, proving that even when it feels disorienting, our training holds. ❤️‍🔥 Bonus points: we shared some laughs!
