Backyard poultry can carry germs that can make you and your children sick, even when the birds appear healthy. Follow these simple steps to help keep your family safe around backyard flocks.

Wash your hands and your kids' hands with soap and water immediately after touching backyard poultry, their eggs, or anything in the area where they live and roam. Use hand sanitizer if soap and water are not readily available.

Don't kiss or snuggle backyard poultry, and don't eat or drink around them. Keep your flock and their supplies outside of the house, and clean supplies outside as well.

Children under 5, adults over 65, and people with weakened immune systems should not handle or touch chicks, ducklings, or other backyard poultry.

Always supervise children around backyard poultry and make sure they wash their hands afterward.

โ€ข Collect eggs often to prevent them from becoming dirty or breaking.
โ€ข Rub dirt off eggs with fine sandpaper, a brush, or a cloth. Don't wash eggs, as colder water can pull germs into the egg.
โ€ข Refrigerate eggs to keep them fresh and slow the growth of germs.
โ€ข Cook eggs until both the yolk and white are firm. Cook egg dishes to an internal temperature of 160ยฐF to kill germs.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Warning for portions of Gila County through 8:45 PM tonight.
Heavy thunderstorms are producing rapidly changing conditions and dangerous flash flooding.
๐Ÿšจ PLEASE AVOID ALL WASHES
Especially Six Shooter Canyon and surrounding drainage areas.
Floodwater can rise quickly and with little or no warning, even in areas where rain is not currently falling.
Do NOT enter or cross washes.
Never drive or walk through floodwater.
Stay away from creeks, drainage channels, and low-water crossings.
Turn around if water is present on the roadway.
If you are near a wash and conditions worsen, move to higher ground immediately.

An Extreme Heat Warning is in effect for portions of Southern Gila County through 8:00 PM Friday, August 28.
