As we approach the beginning of June, I am very disappointed to hear that the Administration has decided against painting the crosswalks adjacent to City Hall in observance of Pride Month.
Beyond that, I’m disappointed that the Administration was unwilling to work with the community to find an alternative.
Now more than ever, Gloucester must stand up for our values — values that we have stood up for time and time again. For over a decade, through multiple federal, state, and local administrations, our City has made this small but mighty gesture as a show of solidarity with our LGBTQ community. This transcends political parties. This rescission sends the wrong message at the wrong time to our neighbors, especially when so many communities are under attack.
Gloucester and greater Cape Ann have come together over the years to make sure that we are welcoming, accepting, and supportive of those in the LGBTQIA+ community. We have raised the Pride Flag, painted the crosswalks, and worked to create an organization that celebrates and hosts Pride activities during the month of June. The City Council has affirmed over the last few years that Gloucester is a place of safety and free from discrimination, especially for those in the LGBTQIA+ community.
It’s time that we stand up for our values. I call on all to urge the Administration to reaffirm Gloucester’s commitment to inclusion, acceptance, and support for our LGBTQIA+ community.
