Our new Naturalist is hitting the ground running!!
Burr Oak State Park's new Naturalist Bradley Cordle just recently started in the park and is hitting the ground with his feet running!!! We will be posting a list of programs for May soon, but Brad wanted to get some programs started right away and wanted you all to know about it:
05/01/2026 - "Walk into Spring": With Summer around the bend, let's take a walk along the Ravine Trail to identify and learn about the many Spring wild flowers that cover Burr Oak State Park's forest floor. The flowers we will encounter will include the lovely fire pinks, large flowering trillium, blue eyed Mary, and much much more. Water and Gatorade will be provided. Dogs are allowed, but must be on a leash. Summer is almost here so lets enjoy our spring flowers while they are still in bloom. Close toed shoes are a good idea and be prepared for muddy trail conditions. bring water, snacks, insect repellant, and rain gear just in case. Hike will start at 4:00pm at Dock 2 and the duration of the hike is expected to be 30 - 40 minutes.
05/02/2026 and 05/08/2026 - "Invasive species removal at the Park": Assist us in removing invasive plant species such as garlic mustard at the Park. Removing invasives benefits our native plant community. When we remove non-native invasive plants it promotes native biodiversity throughout the Park. Non-native invasive plants like garlic mustard outcompete our native plants and form monocultures that offer little to no resources to our native wildlife. We will be pulling garlic mustard and several locations in the park. We will be able to provide some gloves but please bring them if you have them. Bring water, snacks, appropriate clothing and footwear, and a can do attitude! We thank you for supporting the parks efforts to remove invasive plants and support our native plant community in the park. Event will start at 3:00 pm at the Nature Center.
Please come on out to the park to meet Brad and to learn about native plants and help us remove non-native invasive plants. Thanks for your support!!!
