💙 2025 Memorial Award – Sergeant Matt Houghtaling 💙
Each year, the Memorial Award recognizes a community member or organization outside the department who has gone above and beyond in supporting our mission and the people we serve.
This year, we are honored to recognize Sergeant Matt Houghtaling with the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office.
In August 2025, our crews responded to a tragic incident at the Index Wall involving a deceased climber. During the call, we were comforting the climber’s partner and friend, who was experiencing tremendous grief. Despite our best efforts, we couldn’t quite help him find the strength to leave the scene — until Sergeant Houghtaling stepped in.
With empathy, calmness, and compassion, he offered words of encouragement that truly made a difference. His kindness helped the friend begin the walk out and reminded all of us what compassion in service looks like.
Calls like this stay with us — and on that day, Sergeant Houghtaling’s compassion left a lasting impact on everyone present. Thank you, Sergeant Houghtaling, for your partnership, leadership, and humanity. 💙

🔥 2025 Member of the Year – Driver Operator Katie Reed 🔥
Please join us in congratulating Driver Operator Katie Reed, our 2025 Member of the Year!
Katie has taken on numerous projects that have made a meaningful impact within the department, dedicating countless hours of her own time to improving support, training, and overall member well-being. She consistently goes above and beyond — not only staying current in Fire and EMS skills, but also making it a priority to pass that knowledge on to newer members while on shift.
One project that stands out in a big way is the creation of Sky Valley Fire’s Peer Support Team. Katie took the initiative to build this program from the ground up, and since its launch, the team has made approximately 75 peer support contacts with members navigating difficult calls or challenges at home. The success of this program has made a real difference for our members, and we’re grateful for the dedication behind it.
Thank you, Katie, for your hard work, reliability, and commitment to making this department stronger. Congratulations on being named our 2025 Member of the Year! 👏🚒💙
