Over the course of the summer, we have been working with Curry Public Library website designer Anneliese Dehner on an update to the library's website. It gives the site a fresher look, but also highlights offerings that didn't exist when we launched the first version of this website, like the Library of Things and gives users access to a menu of accessibility tools to adjust the look of the website. Options include: making the text bigger, changing line spacing, adjusting the contrast, pausing animations, switching the font to one that is dyslexia-friendly, and more. To access those tools, click on the round icon with a person in it in the lower left of the page you are viewing.

The update is not complete just yet. We'll be going through page by page to update content and imagery, and are still working on some tweaks, but you get a pretty good sense of the new look. Check out the new website here: https://www.currypubliclibrary.org/

On Sunday, October 18 at 2pm-4pm, Lisa Lynne & Aryeh Frankfurter perform on two Celtic harps alongside the rare Swedish nyckelharpa, Ukrainian bandura, cittern, and more. Their music carries audiences across Sweden and Ireland through traditional instrumental music, woven together with heartwarming original compositions. Their concerts are an enchanting blend of music and storytelling, filled with humor and tales from a lifetime of adventures as modern-day troubadours. Join Curry Public Library's Sci-Fi Book Club as we read the 1953 classic Childhood’s End by Arthur C. Clarke! Book discussion will be on Saturday, October 17 at 11am.

A Message from Library Director Jeremy Skinner:

This fall has been filled with some major challenges in directing the library. I will begin with one of the hardest decisions I have made since I began working here in 2014. Starting on October 12th, Curry Public Library will be closed on Mondays. For years we have been able to remain open every day of the week through creative scheduling and the support of volunteers, but the past four years of accelerating inflation, particularly in the area of property and liability insurance, has cut into our ability to maintain this schedule. We do not anticipate this schedule change being permanent as we are taking action to eliminate some costs, while finding new funding streams for others. We continue to work closely with our Friends of the Library and our Library Foundation to fund many aspects of the library. As a result, all of our program costs are funded through grants and gifts, and we are hoping to expand this support into other areas.

The library will begin to see significant utility savings as our solar infrastructure goes online in the next year. This massive project, which is funded entirely with a Community Resiliency Energy Program grant from the State of Oregon, is a management challenge in and of itself. As I write this message, contractors are digging into the ground in preparation to pour concrete piers to support three solar canopy structures. We are planning to keep the library open during construction, but please drive carefully when you visit our site. If everything proceeds according to plan, the structures should be in place by the end of November.

Moving forward, one silver lining to being closed on Mondays is that it will provide an opportunity for deferred maintenance on our closure day. That said, I hope to revisit this schedule during our next budget cycle. Our goal remains to be the best small library anywhere, and we will continue to work to make this a reality.

RESOURCE SHARE: THE OREGON FAMILY SUPPORT NETWORK

The Oregon Family Support Network (OFSN) offers free and voluntary in-home visit programming known as Parents As Teachers (PAT). Delivered by certified parent educators, PAT helps families build confidence, strengthen parent-child relationships, and support healthy development from pregnancy through the early years. Through personalized home visits, developmental screenings, family-centered resources, and engaging activities, PAT provides guidance and support tailored to your family’s unique strengths and needs.

We're pleased to announce that there is now a PAT program supporting families right here in Gold Beach, with local Emily Moore providing support to families. OSFN also provides a Reach Out Oregon Parent Warmline at 1-833-732-2467. This is a number that can be called for parenting support and help navigating resources. Call or text Monday to Friday from 10am-4pm (except holidays), or leave a message any time!
