A lot of work has been happening between Commissioner Trost, Commissioner Coker and myself in regard to correcting all the wrongdoing that has happened to our county's operations and finances. While attending all the BOC meetings while I was campaigning a couple years ago, I was able to learn much back then regarding the budget and how the County operated as a whole, and to be honest it was shocking the level of wrongdoing. This is why back then I called for there to be a forensic audit on all county finances and operations. It was also shocking to me that when I called for this to be done, I was immediately verbally attacked and criticized by our Sheriff and many within the Sheriff's Office. All that made me do was think to myself...well that's odd, wonder why they wouldn't want to be transparent with the public on the finances? Well, there is an old quote that says, "if it walks like a duck, talks like a duck, looks like a duck, then it's probably a duck."

As items continue to be exposed from this forensic audit, it will unfortunately affect many people within the County. Some that are directly involved, some that are not and for those who have blind loyalties. People will be shocked, surprised, saddened and angry, but us Commissioners have a fiduciary responsibility to report all the wrongdoing and to be transparent with the public. We are cleaning up the mess that has been Curry County for decades, we are undeterred and more motivated than ever to bring progress and prosperity back to Curry County, but first we have to expose all the bad, hold those accountable, correct policies and procedures, get our finances stable and sustainable, and create a strong long-lasting foundation for us to build on for generations to come. It's a long process, honestly, wish it was faster, but we are being extremely thorough and ensuring we are following ORS and all applicable laws. Yes, we are spending money on attorneys and legal fees, but it is an absolute must in order to fix our County at this stage. We are very fortunate to have a strong team of legal professionals, and they are worth their weight in this critical process.

More and more information is coming to light and if you follow our meetings and discussions you will begin to understand more of what we are doing and why. We all appreciate the outpouring of support in our mission and know that what we are doing is for the good of our County and all the folks that live here!

Spent some time in Salem at the Capitol this week. I went to the hearing for HB 4148 with 8-10 other commissioners to testify in support of the bill. The Association of Oregon Counties had a reception in Capitol that was attended by State Legislators, State Agencies, Lobbyists and others. This was another opportunity to have conversations, socialize, network and talk with these folks and develop relationships for the future of Curry County.

Subjects of interest and ones that could affect our county that we covered in these 3 days:

Recreational liability that would apply to recreational business owners, aligns Oregon with recreational liability policies in all other Western states.

TLT reform 70/30 split in favor of state to 60/40 in favor of collecting entities. Making these funds available and flexible for more uses where they are collected.

1.25% for Wildlife HB 4134 increases TLT to fund natural resource programs. There are parts that appeal to different sectors, but it could face opposition being a new tax.

Public Safety has some EMS related legislation HB 4053, 4106, 4121

Tuesday there were 37 commissioners from 23 counties in the Capitol for the day. We got updates on the session from the President of the Senate and Speaker of the House, sat in the Senate Gallery for SCR 204 and then headed to appointments with legislators.

I met with Rep. Boice and Sen. Brock Smith and other legislators from around the state to talk about bills that will benefit counties statewide. Meeting and talking with these folks you learn from and get perspective from their parts of the states and realize that we all face many of the same issues. I was able to talk with members of state agencies and groups that were working on some of the same issues while in the building.

The push to get these bills into committee and have their readings will really start to speed up now. Amendments will be added, language will get changed, some will not make it out of committee. Association of Oregon Counties staff keep us up to date on many of these bills and will call on us if there is a need to reach out, testify in person or online if necessary.

I have attached the video for the hearing on the HB 4148 TLT bill, hearing starts @ 31:00 my turn starts at 1hr 40 mins.

As always, I am committed to serving Curry County and honored to represent Curry County at all levels of Government.
