The new Emergency Access Road (EAR) has been completed and the community is encouraged to participate in an Evacuation Training on Saturday, July 25th at 10:00 am. If you want to drive the EAR please line up in your vehicles at the gate by the Solitude tennis courts off of Bitterroot Ln by 10:00 am.

Genesee Fire Rescue personnel will be on site and there will be traffic control at the bottom where the EAR exits onto HWY 74. You will not be allowed to drive back up the EAR to return to Genesee. You will need to drive around via HWY 74 in order to return to Genesee.

PLEASE drive carefully and slowly down the EAR (under 20 mph), and to help control your speed without riding your brakes it is recommended that you put your vehicle in a lower gear.

A REMINDER: In the event of an evacuation order for Genesee, the default evacuation route will be to go to I-70 via your normal route. The EAR will ONLY be used for an evacuation if you are directed specifically to use the EAR.

In this training the aerial operator and spotter work together to hook and lift a bucket and then nest the bucket into another bucket. The thing is that the operator can see the bucket when picking it up, but the other bucket that they need to nest it in is hidden behind the cab of the truck. They are entirely reliant on the direction from their spotter to nest it.

It takes a steady hand and good communication. This is how we train to be able to maneuver a very heavy piece of equipment carrying lives safely and effectively.

This Saturday (5/23/26) you may notice a lot of wildland firefighters in Genesee. Don't be alarmed. GFR is hosting a large interagency wildland training from about 7:00 am to 2:00 pm.

We will be working in several areas training on various skills with our regional partners to better protect our community and the greater region.

Due to winter storm weather, the Emergency Access Route dedication is postponed from Wednesday, 6 May to Tuesday, 26 May.

UPDATE: I-70 has reopened.

Van on fire westbound I-70 around mile marker 255, in between Lookout Mountain and Genesee. The number 2 and 3 lanes are closed, and traffic is backed up about a mile. The fire began to spread, but firefighters were able to contain it. Avoid the area for the next few hours if you can. Genesee Fire Rescue

Three GFR officers took the opportunity to attend this year’s FDIC in Indianapolis , the largest international firefighter conference in the USA. They participated in hands on live fire and skills trainings as well a various classroom trainings on tactics and leadership.

They return home with more knowledge and experience that will be shared to improve the service we provide to our community.

The wildland fire potential in our area is expected to be above normal in June and July. Keep in mind that this is a very general outlook and not "Red Flag" forecasts which we can expect to have here even during the "normal fire potential" times in April and May.

Yes, it got really smoky over the past hour or so here in Genesee. This is from smoke blowing in from the fires in Nebraska. But if you do see a smoke column, not just this general haze, please call 911.
