We’ll be continuing the pilot hours at the Slash Site for the next few months. Thanks to everyone who has shared feedback so far—keep an eye out for another survey coming soon!

🌲🔥 What if forest treatments could help trees defend themselves?

Research on the Front Range shows that thinning and low-severity wildfire can boost ponderosa pine growth and strengthen natural defenses against beetles and drought.

Join us for a free online talk exploring how disturbance, when done right, can improve forest resilience at the tree level. This information directly impacts where YOU live. Stay educated, stay safe!

MPB Monthly Tips – March

Picking a Contractor
If you are wanting to hire someone to spray your trees or to apply the pheromone packets (Verbenone) to protect against mountain pine beetle (MPB) here are some things to keep in mind:

Anyone applying pesticides for hire (including Verbenone) must be licensed by the Colorado Department of Agriculture as a Commercial Applicator and must hold the appropriate categories including 106-Forest Pest Control and/or 207-Ornamental Pest Control. CDA has a business look up tool that you can use to verify a company’s licensing. https://bit.ly/3OuYO9Z

When Choosing a Contractor -
• You should verify that they meet industry standards.
• CSFS recommends that you consider asking about areas such as insurance, licensing, references, referrals, and professional qualifications.

If You Will Have Your Trees Sprayed -
• Consider only treating high value trees.
• Treatment should occur between May and mid-June.
• Typically, only one application a year is needed for mountain pine beetle control.

If You Will be Applying Verbenone Yourself -
• You may want to purchase the product now so you have it ready to apply between May and mid-June.
• Our MPB Resources page includes a short list of vendors we are aware of, though additional suppliers may also be available.
• Please note that Verbenone is most effective when MPB populations are light to moderate. In areas experiencing heavy activity, Verbenone is not recommended. https://www.jeffco.us/5104/MPB---Resources

Did You Know?
• MPB can fly between ¼- ½ mile.
• If they are above the canopy - the wind can spread them even further – up to 50 miles or more.
