The AVA board would like the association members and neighboring communities to know we have not and would not send anything like this to our members or neighboring communities. We are in the process of contacting the authorities and ask anyone who gets these type of unlawful letters to do the same. We do not have any HOA authority and are strictly a community enrichment and advocacy group. We mail one piece of informational/application form a year...unless major events takes place(applewood golf course). Thanks for understanding.

If y’all haven’t heard, tomorrow (Sunday) is when Sustainable Applewood is hosting the Applewood Chalk Extravaganza!

Basically, what you need to know:
1) Add your house to our art map using this link so neighbors can plan walks or drives for viewing (optional, but strongly encouraged!). We will update our map multiple times tonight and tomorrow, so please add yours!! (This also helps us know how many homes are participating!)
Add your house via https://forms.gle/Ds33b8oXabfTcfSX9

2) Then: Prep your art. Put it on your sidewalk, your driveway, your brick wall, or wherever you’d like during the morning or day tomorrow, Sunday, October 18th.

3) Use THIS SPECIAL MAP LINK to visit chalk around the neighborhood!! When you click on it, zoom out so you see Appewood. All of the green paint canvas icons on the map indicate a home participating. Then, walk, bike or drive around and enjoy!!

The Applewood Sustainable Neighborhood Network free 🍅 🌽 🌶 produce stand is back.

“How it works:
We have a table where you can check out what others have left and where you can leave anything you want to share. You don't have to bring any vegetables in order to enjoy what's at the stand.
We'll have hand sanitizer, some flyers, and a spot where you can put a checkmark to indicate you visited.

What to share:
Veggies, fruit, farm fresh eggs, backyard honey, or anything else you'd like! This summer, we're also encouraging+welcoming sharing copies of a favorite recipe (maybe related to our Produce-of-the-Week or just something that's delicious!).

Who it's for:
This is a community offering for the Applewood neighborhood! If you're receiving this message, we'd love for you to come on by!”

Supporting Applewood Businesses
In our last email, we asked which businesses we could support during this time. Here are some answers.

From the businesses
We asked Applewood businesses to let us know how neighbors could support them, and this is what the businesses shared:

Sweet Peas Gardening
Julianne Berg
[email protected], (303) 278-2295
Offering spring garden clean-up, garden maintenance, design/consult, and xeriscaping. Julianne has been an Applewood community garden member/advocate for 12 years. She's offering these specials:
One hour of free services/labor
Senior discounts

Urban Exteriors
John or Jennifer Hess

Online shopping available!
Catering company serving authentic Central Texas Style Barbecue. We are a locally owned, small family business located in Applewood. Please email us to get on our client list or follow us on Facebook or Instagram. We offer catering and a takeout style tasting event we call “Small Order Weekend “ each month for potential clients, neighbors, and the general public. We are licensed under the State, Jefferson County, and City of Lakewood.
Options include whole beef briskets, pulled pork, pork spare ribs by the rack and a range of sides.

From the neighbors
We asked you who you're trying to support and these local businesses were submitted:

Abruscis. They figured out how to support their employees and the neighborhood. We order frequently.

Applewood Vietnamese Restaurant & Pho Grill at 20th and Youngfield; we love EVERYTHING - the fantastic food, the people, the prices, the convenience; we order take-out 1x/week (have ramped up tips considerably during this time)

El Bohio Criollo Cuban Cuisine (2080 Youngfield). They have great cuban sandwiches and fried plantains -- perfect for takeout back home or to a socially-distanced picnic location. Plus the sandwiches are big enough for 2 meals! I'm trying to stop by once a week (about 2x as often as before the zombie apocalypse) and pick up dinner for our entire family. I hope this great little neighborhood gem is still around when this nonsense is over!

Inspiration Fitness (inFit); I have been taking classes from them since they opened their doors - they have a wide variety of offerings from personal training, small group, Functional Fitness, BodyWork, Strong45, Zumba and Barre - all taught virtually now (they've even put together fitness kits you can buy to use at home). One can purchase memberships, punch-cards and/or do a drop-in. Check them out at InspirationFitnessStudio.com. I take classes 5 days/week and my daughter does one. Will continue to support in any way they need.

Move! (20th and Youngfield). I was so happy to see this place go in, and I like the community events and different classes they offer. You can get a punchcard to support them and use it for online classes or even use it down the road, because it never expires.

Mugs and Cones (20th and Kipling). It's a coffee, ice cream, and Mexican cafe (a mix of burritos, tostadas, and some of the best churros) over by the DMV. This is a great mom-and-pop that just celebrated its first year in business. They have some of the best breakfast burritos in this state. We call ahead and then swing by to pick up our order. We try to go a few times a week. If you haven't been there yet, you should go today!!

Youngfield Cleaners at 20th and Wadsworth. This is the dry cleaners behind Teller's. They've take a huge hit with everyone working from home. We've continued to take items in, and we're taking in those random items around the house (throw pillow covers, curtains, wedding dress), that we've wanted to get done for some time.

Letter to Jeffco Families,

“Dear Jeffco Public Schools staff, students, and families,

On Wednesday, April 1, Colorado Governor Jared Polis extended the state-wide suspension of in-person instruction at all public and private schools through April 30 due to the COVID-19 outbreak. School districts have been encouraged to work with their local county health departments for further guidance on how to proceed.

After consultation with Jefferson County Public Health and in coordination with other districts in the metro Denver area, we have made the difficult decision to suspend in-person instruction for the remainder of the school year. We will continue on our path delivering remote learning for students and remote work for staff through the end of this school year, 2019-2020.

The key factor leading to this decision is guidance from county health officials and the information shared in the Governor’s announcement that the impact of COVID-19 is likely to peak from mid-April through possibly July. This creates a significant safety risk for all of our students, families, and staff members and because of that determination, we believe extending our remote learning program is a wise step for us to take as a district and a community.

The joint statement below reflects this similar action taken by 14 metro-area school districts. We believe that making this decision at this time will bring clarity and reduce some of the uncertainty being experienced by our students and families.

We know there are many unanswered questions, including the status of graduations and other end-of-year events, final exam schedules, preparing buildings and classrooms for end-of-school-year closures, and construction plans. We are working to determine the answers to these, and other questions, and we will be sharing that information as soon as possible. We appreciate your ongoing support, trust, and patience as we work through these challenging issues and uncertain times as a community.

April 3, 2020

Dear Community Members,

As many of you know, upon becoming aware of the spread of COVID-19 in Colorado and the myriad concerns inherent, school superintendents took action several weeks ago to protect students, staff and the community. We have been working hard to provide leadership guidance to families throughout Colorado. As school superintendents, we consult and collaborate many times each day to share thinking and to problem solve as a regional group.

Two days ago, on April 1, Governor Polis announced extended closures of schools in Colorado through April 30, 2020. Over the past several weeks, we have spoken regularly and often to public health officials and state officials to better understand the timeline and path forward for the year, both with regard to COVID-19 and “traditional” school year expectations. We understand that there are not specific answers to exactly how and when we return to “life as normal” during this unprecedented health crisis. Given that, we must rely upon our best judgement and place safety above all else.

What is clear is that there will not be definitive, universal guidance to proceed as normal. Rather, there will be a gradual lifting of restrictions and a step-by-step return to normalcy. What we do know is that once the “Stay at Home” orders are lifted, we will continue to have restrictions on social distancing and the size of group gatherings for at least several weeks, if not months. Given the nature of a school environment (classrooms, passing periods, buses, playgrounds, etc.), these restrictions are not practical within the school setting. As such, there does not appear to be a viable way for us to convene traditional in-person learning this school year.

Collectively we believe, and are making the decision, that in the best interest of the children, staff, and the communities that we serve, our schools will remain closed to in-person learning for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year.

A significant consideration in making this decision today is guidance from the respective health departments serving our districts. Many models currently show that the impact of COVID-19 is likely to peak in the last week of April. Even once COVID-19 reaches its peak in Colorado, we know that there will be an equivalent amount of time after the peak in which the virus continues to pose a significant threat. The continued safety and public health risk this presents for our students, staff, families, and communities moves us to take the step of extended closure to in-person learning through the balance of the school year.

Additionally, providing a concrete direction now with regard to in-person learning for the duration of the school year allows us to focus our energy and attention to addressing questions and concerns, rather than ongoing uncertainty. It will also allow us, as school district leaders, to shift to a proactive stance in that we can begin to plan for completing the current year remotely, and returning to school in August when we are able to joyfully welcome our students, staff and families back into our buildings.

Making this decision was extremely difficult. We do believe, however, that this is the right decision given all of the information that we have received from health experts and state officials. Our teams have been hard at work developing quality remote learning opportunities for our students. Please know that the health and safety of our students, staff and families is paramount. We believe that finishing this school year through remote learning is one of the most effective ways in which we can do our part to avoid exposing anyone to unnecessary risk.

Sincerely,

Chris Fiedler
