This Pride Month, we celebrate the dignity, freedom, and equality of LGBTQ+ people everywhere.

A healthy democracy protects every person's right to live as themselves and believe as they choose. The separation of church and state helps ensure that everyone, regardless of faith, belief, gender identity, or sexual orientation, is treated equally under the law.

Pride is a reminder that freedom and equality belong to all of us. 🌈

Year after year, the highly irreligious Nordic countries top the World Happiness Report. Finland holds first place again in the 2025 edition — the eighth year running — with Denmark, Iceland, Sweden and Norway all in the top ten.

Strong welfare, high social trust, robust public services — plenty drives a country's happiness, and no one's claiming secularism is the only factor. But it certainly undermines claims that declining religion leads to social decline.

Second of five in a short series — see link in comments from case studies from New Zealand, Taiwan and Uruguay too.

Too true.

Too true.

The Evangelical Christian Church doth protest too much, methinks.

Jesus talked about feeding the poor.
Caring for the sick.
Welcoming the stranger.
Loving our enemies.
Refusing to throw stones.
Not judging, lest we be judged.
Taking the plank out of our own eye before performing speck surgery on everyone else.

The Son of God talked about:
Humility. Mercy.
Forgiveness. Justice.
Truth. Compassion.

And He had a whole lot to say about religious hypocrites who used God’s name to control people while ignoring or targeting the vulnerable.

You know… completely unrelated to anything happening in America. Obviously. 😉

So why has MAGA Evangelical Christianity built so much of its identity around things Jesus never addressed, much less use it as the loudest pillar of their faith?

I can't help but believe that if LGBTQ+ was to be a loud, defining factor of our faith, He would have talked about it. At least once. He didn't.

And that should tell us something.

So if you are more outraged by the gay couple down the street than by powerful people exploiting the vulnerable, abusing women and children, protecting predators, lying for power, blasphemy, and mocking mercy…

I can say this with relative confidence:

Your Christianity may be loud.
But it isn’t centered on Christ.

And to my LGBTQ+ friends…

You are not a debate topic here.
You are not a problem to solve.
You are not a sin category to manage.

You are loved here.
You are welcome here.

And you don’t have to earn a seat at the table Jesus already set.

"Americans may be struggling to afford food, gas and a visit to the doctor, but drugs and alcohol are more affordable than ever.

The upshot is a society that can easily get drunk and high. That’s a less healthy society: About 48 million Americans are addicted to some kind of drug, a statistic that includes alcohol. Roughly 70,000 a year die from overdoses. Despite a welcome dip in drinking, about 178,000 die each year from excessive alcohol consumption."

Evidence suggests that people would drink and use illegal drugs less if the prices were higher.

Many voters today feel disengaged from politics, but apathy is not an option. Building an inclusive, multiracial democracy requires active participation.

Now is a great time to double-check your voter registration and make sure you're ready to make your voice heard before the midterms in November!
