25 Years On. Still Needed.

August 31st is International Overdose Awareness Day 2026

Twenty-five years after International Overdose Awareness Day began, the message remains just as important: overdose continues to affect people from every walk of life.

Behind every statistic is a person — someone loved, valued, and deeply missed. And behind every loss is a ripple felt by families, friends, and communities.

Today, we remember those we have lost, support those who are struggling, and reaffirm the importance of prevention, compassion, treatment, and recovery.

25 years on. Still needed. Still remembering. Still working toward a future where fewer lives are lost to overdose. 💜

🌫️ Air Quality Update

Air quality across the county is currently in the moderate range (AQI 70–100) due to lingering smoke from area wildfires.

While conditions are not currently in the unhealthy range for most people, those who are sensitive to air pollution—including children, older adults, and people with heart or lung conditions—may notice symptoms as smoke levels fluctuate.

💨 Keep an eye on the AQI and consider limiting prolonged or strenuous outdoor activity if air quality worsens.

Whether it’s peer counseling, breastfeeding supplies, or connecting with lactation specialists, WIC is ready to help you meet your breastfeeding goals! 💕Hear what a WIC participant had to say about her experience with breastfeeding counseling:

“Honestly, it was hard for me. So, my baby wouldn’t latch, and that was really hard for me because I had no experience breastfeeding. I didn’t know what to do. That’s why I’m so grateful to my breastfeeding counselor, for everything she did for me.” - WIC Participant

At WIC, we are here to support you through every stage of your breastfeeding journey. ❤️Visit www.signupwic.com to learn more about WIC breastfeeding benefits and find a clinic near you. 🤱

Prevention starts before there’s a problem. 💙

Substance Use Primary Prevention Month is a time to focus on the things we can do to prevent substance use and promote healthier communities—especially among children and teens.

Small actions can make a big difference:
• Build strong, supportive relationships
• Talk openly and honestly about substance use
• Help young people develop healthy coping skills
• Encourage positive activities and connections
• Know the risk factors and protective factors in your community
• Be a trusted, supportive adult

Prevention is about more than saying “no.” It’s about creating communities where people have the support, skills, and resources they need to make healthy choices.

Together, we can strengthen protective factors and help build a healthier, safer community. 🌱
