The torch is more than a flame β€” it is a symbol of hope for Special Olympics athletes. It represents courage, inclusion, diversity, and the fiery passion each athlete carries with them.

This morning, CHP officers joined numerous law enforcement agencies in participating in the Law Enforcement Torch Run to honor and support Special Olympics athletes. Together, we proudly carried the Flame of Hope and celebrated the determination, strength, and inspiring spirit of these incredible athletes.

Today, we had the honor of participating in the Special Olympics Tip-A-Cop event alongside the incredible athletes, volunteers, and community members who make this organization so special. Officers traded in citations for serving trays as we helped serve food, clean tables, and raise funds to support Special Olympics athletes and their programs.

Thank you to everyone who came out, donated, and showed support for these inspiring athletes. Events like this remind us what community partnerships are all about inclusion, teamwork, and giving back.

We are proud to support the mission of Special Olympics and the Law Enforcement Torch Run. Together, we continue to raise awareness and create opportunities for athletes to shine both on and off the field. πŸ’™πŸ…

Their sacrifice reminds us that safety is a responsibility we all share. As we reflect on their service, we encourage everyone to drive safely, remain vigilant and make responsible choices on the road.

Officer Ricardo Ayala, assigned to the Santa Barbara Area since graduating from the CHP Academy in 2016, was recognized for his heroic actions during a plane crash on January 29, 2025, and honored with the prestigious H. Thomas Guerry Award for Valor.

The H. Thomas Guerry Award is one of Santa Barbara County’s highest law enforcement honors, recognizing extraordinary courage, professionalism, and service above and beyond the call of duty.

While conducting a traffic stop near Los Carneros Road and US-101, Officer Ayala witnessed a small aircraft fall from the sky and crash into a nearby field. Without hesitation, he responded to the burning wreckage, climbed a perimeter fence, and sprinted toward the aircraft to render aid.
Officer Ayala pulled the severely injured pilot away from the flames moments before the aircraft became fully engulfed. He also provided life-saving aid to the co-pilot until paramedics arrived.

Thanks to Officer Ayala’s courage, quick thinking, and selfless actions, both victims survived. His dedication to safety, service, and the protection of others represents the very best of the California Highway Patrol.

Thank you, Officer Ayala, for your bravery and commitment to the community.
