The Ander-Weser Volunteer Fire Department would like to share an important water safety message originally posted by the Montgomery County Fire Marshal’s Office.
As summer approaches and families spend more time around pools, rivers, lakes, and the coast, it is important to remember that drowning remains one of the leading causes of accidental death for young children. According to the Montgomery County Fire Marshal’s Office, 22 Texas children have drowned so far in 2026.
Drowning can happen quickly and quietly, often in less time than it takes to send a text message or answer a phone call. The best prevention is active, undistracted supervision whenever children are in or around water.
✔ Designate a Water Watcher
✔ Keep children within arm’s reach when appropriate
✔ Use properly fitted life jackets around open water
✔ Learn CPR and basic water rescue skills
✔ Never assume someone else is watching
A few moments of attention can make all the difference.
