Chief Ferguson is pleased to announce a Captain Promotion effective June 1, 2026. Please join us in congratulating Captain Daniel M. Coughlin.
Captain Daniel M. “Danny” Coughlin is highly deserving and has diligently prepared himself for this promotion over the course of 20 years with the Goochland County Department of Fire-Rescue & Emergency Services. Danny began his fire service career in 2006 as a volunteer with Manakin Company 1. He worked for Lifeline Ambulance Service assigned to Goochland as an EMS provider. In 2008, when Goochland County transitioned to County Staffing, Danny became one of the department’s ten original career Fire-Rescue personnel. He has been assigned to Stations 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, and the Training & Safety Division. Danny was promoted to Lieutenant in July 2022.
Since beginning his career, Danny has continually pursued professional growth and operational excellence. He has earned certifications as a National Registered Paramedic, Structural and Wildland Firefighter, Driver Pump Operator, Aerial Operator, Fire Instructor, and TECC provider. Danny is an RSI Medic, an EMS Field Training Officer, and a member of the Water Rescue Team. Danny is passionate about education, mentorship, and workforce development. In 2019, he completed the Virginia OEMS Education Coordinator Program, allowing him to teach EMT programs throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. He has successfully led and managed three full firefighter recruit academies and several pre-certified recruit schools, achieving a 100% certification pass rate across all programs. He continues to teach EMT classes in Goochland County, manages EMS orientation, and coordinates all American Heart Association CPR programs for the department.
In addition to his training responsibilities, Danny has created and continues to maintain several department wide operational and administrative programs and systems focused on improving efficiency, organization, communication, and operational readiness. He is especially passionate about mentoring firefighters and EMS providers in the station environment and takes pride in working alongside his crew each day.
Outside of Goochland, he has served as a career Firefighter Paramedic with Spotsylvania County Fire Rescue and Emergency Management and is an EMS Instructor with VCU Center for Trauma and Critical Care Education. Off duty, he enjoys spending time with his family, his wife and three children.
