Virginia becomes first Southern state to mandate paid family and medical leave for workers

After Gov. Abigail Spanberger signed twin bills on Monday, Virginia is now on track to establish a paid family and medical leave program by 2028. The new law builds on the governor’s campaign promises and several years of work by state lawmakers who have long championed the measure. Senate Bill 2 by Sen. Jennifer Boysko, D-Fairfax, and House Bill 1207 by Del. Brianna Sewell, D-Prince William, will allow workers to take up to 12 weeks off when caring for ill family members, receiving long-term care for their own health, or when having a child. The law also allows up to four weeks of “safe leave” for people enduring domestic violence, sexual assault or harassment. This time off can support survivors navigating legal systems and major life changes as they escape unsafe situations.

No surprise: Records suggest 4-3 partisan divide among Virginia Supreme Court that ruled against redistricting

With no registration by party in Virginia, one of the best indicators of political allegiance is a voter’s history of participating in primary elections. By that measure, a review of the primary voting history of the justices of the Supreme Court of Virginia suggests that last week’s 4-3 decision [on redistricting] fell along partisan lines. Three of the four justices who voted to nullify an April 21 ballot initiative that Republicans opposed have voted exclusively in GOP state-run primary contests in the last 15 years, according to voter participation data from L2, a company that maintains voter file records in all 50 states. The fourth justice who backed the plan has not voted in primary elections, but had made political donations to GOP candidates before he became a judge, according to a campaign finance database maintained by the nonpartisan Virginia Public Access Project.
